Looking at the whole situation these seems like a 'perfect' solution.

The South has a huge shortage of women in the 18-45 'marriage' bracket, to solve this problem they have been importing women from SE Asia, with Husbands paying up to $5000 for a bride.

If brides were imported from the North, it seems as if it would be a better solution for all involved.

From the North's perspective:
Say 20000 brides at $5000 = $100mill - Money they desperatly need.
Additionally, 20,000 less mouths to feed - for a country fighting famine on a yearly basis, not a small issue.
For the women, the opportunity to live in the South would negate almost all the negatives of such a situation and for the vast majority would be a huge step up.

From the South's perspective:
Huge shortage of women.
Ethnically homogenous and racist country - Importing Korean brides would maintain the "bloodline' and children of such marriages would be better accepted in society.
In addition, the men would prefer korean brides.
Also, Korean is a very difficult language to learn, while I'm aware the the North and South dialects are different - It would be much easier for a North Korean to learn the language and subsequently assimilate in the South than someone from SE Asia.

Thoughts?

Kim Jong Il takes all the good women for himself. I hear he has a sizeable harem. I'm sure his generals and those loyal to him have their pick too,

If you think South Korean women are skinny, I can't imagine what North Korean women would look like.

Why would anyone want to leave North Korea and the Dear Leader?

Why would South Korea let 20,000 female soldiers cross its border, and pay them 5grand a piece?

I wouldn't pay $5000 for a North Korean.

More like they should be paying South Korean men to SAVE them!

Otherside, I assume you're joking - but in case you're not:

This would never, in a million years, happen.

1) KJI doesn't give a shit about his people, so it doesn't bother him that they're starving.
2) Admitting that his people would rather leave for the South than stay would be a huge loss of face for him.
3) It wouldn't benefit him in any immediate way.

resentment and competition between Pyeongyang and Seoul (and Shilla) was prevalent throughout the three kingdom period and is a hallmark of Korean history

the north as a breeding factory for the south? major loss of face

Well, they do...indirectly.

Every year NK women come here from NE China. More commonly, however, the women are simply minority Koreans who live in NE China.

I assume if YOUR POLICY was put into place and SK men were actually able to "import" women from NK, the same thing would happen that is happening with the Chinese Koreans.

They'd run away.

Why do SK men want brides who they are unable to carry a conversation with as opposed to Korean speaking minority brides from NE China? (there are thousands of Chinese Koreans who would be willing to come over)

Because it's easier to keep your Vietnamese wife under control if she can't speak the language. If they do run away, it's hard for a Vietnamese woman to go into hiding. The Korean women from China simply run away when they've taken too much abuse from their ajoshi husbands. They get jobs in other cities, remarry or simply make as much money as they can until they scram back to the mainland.

I would love to have the statistics of how many SEA women have actually managed to get their passports back from their husbands so they could run back to their country.

Down here we have a Vietnamese girl who married into a family with 4 handicapped daughters (genetic). Did she know what she was getting into? Are you kidding? There's another Vietnamese girl who married a 58 year old man who subsequently died of cancer, but not before giving her a child. So, now she's single with a child in a Korea. She left the kid with Korean family, went to Pusan to make money. She's coming back for the child, but only when she has made a new start for herself.

There's some ugly stuff going down on the ROK.

It's much easier to throw the Vietnamese girls over the balcony.

Why doesn't the North just end communism and have laissez-faire capitalism if they need money desperately, too?
