|
|
My low-level rural middle school is running a 1-week English camp this winter. One class of kids, 4 hours a day, straight (well, with 10 minute breaks, but same students with me all day). They want to use a book for the course, and have asked me for recommendations, but I have absolutely no clue.
Does anybody have any good textbook recommendations? I have tried to convince them that using a book is a bad idea, but they'll have none of it, so... |

For reading I found "More True Stories - A High Beginning Reader" by Sandra Heyer useful and entertaining.
The more basic "Very Easy True Stories" is also available.
I used it at my hagwon last year and it seemed a good book. |

Where can I find it? Does it contain activities already? |

Did you not read my post? I would rather not use a book, but my school is requiring it. |

I second these books. With a little ingenuity you could probably use the internet sites to make activities and fun stuff to go along with the themes of the stories. That way you would be using the book, but the students could have fun. Maybe use one story and discusssion for the first hour and a matching activity for the second hour, then a story for the third hour and a matching activity for the fourth hour. You would only get halfway through the book, but it would be more interesting. |

There's a series called "Keep on Reading" that is really good because:
there are many levels available
the stories are varied and color parsed for group/turn reading
there are many exercises from writing to drawing to brainstorming
I got some from Kyobo and the students are surprised when class time is over. |
