http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/12/14/iran.acid.justice/index.html

Quote:
An Iranian woman, blinded by a jilted stalker who threw acid in her face, has persuaded a court to sentence him to be blinded with acid himself under Islamic law demanding an eye for an eye.

Ameneh Bahrami refused to accept "blood money." She insisted instead that her attacker suffer a fate similar to her own "so people like him would realize they do not have the right to throw acid in girls' faces," she told the Tehran Provincial Court.

Her attacker, a 27-year-old man identified in court papers as Majid, admitted throwing acid in her face in November 2004, blinding and disfiguring her. He said he loved her and insisted she loved him as well.

He has until early this week to appeal the sentence.

How many roads must a man walk down,
before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove fly,
before she sleeps in the sand?
And how many times must a cannon ball fly,
before they're forever banned?

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind,
the answer is blowing in the wind.

How many years can a mountain exist,
before it is washed to the sea?
How many years can some people exist,
before they're allowed to be free?
And how many times can a man turn his head,
and pretend that he just doesn't see?

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind,
the answer is blowing in the wind.

How many times must a man look up,
before he sees the sky?
And how many ears must one man have,
before he can hear people cry ?
And how many deaths will it take till we know,
that too many people have died?

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind,
the answer is blowing in the wind.

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind,
the answer is blowing in the wind.

This is justice I can actually applaud. I never thought I'd see something appealing in Sharia law.

I'm sure he won't be throwing acid in any more faces after this. And hopefully it will give others pause as well.

Yeah, maybe he'll think twice next time or maybe he'll just kill her instead. This isn't justice, it's tit-for-tat retribution. What's to say he doesn't decide that she's ruined his life in a few months time, tracks her down, and kills her? Are you happy that a guy who throws acid in womens' faces is able to walk about freely having paid the price for his crime?

Make him drink the acid instead. Problem solved.

Actually, seriously, we're alking Iran here-as much as that appeals on first blush, I'd rather have the scumbag jailed for life than the punishment, and it lowers the enforment authorities; and no, I'm not an anti-Capitla Punishment bleeding heart.

What's next? You're driving, you're brakes fail and someone is paralyzed so you get same-same? No thanks.

On the other hand, how culturally ingrained or intractable must the problem be that the guy apparently thought he could get off despite admitting in open court to tossing acid in a woman's face?

What makes you say he thought he could get off?

I went to Iran earlier this year. Absolutely loved it - mind blowing place - can't wait to go back.

The thing that struck me was that through the many, many layers of Iranian government, judiciary, religious councils etc. it actually enforces a society that does infact have a lot of stability and harmony.

It may appear harsh to outsiders, but it is a workable system.

^My step-father is Iranian and I think he'd be inclined to disagree being as he's seen it from both sides.

Basically, you can financially sidestep the judicial consequences of your actions as you can with regards to those other institutional 'layers' you mention. The only thing 'workable' about it is the prevalent rampant corruption.
