I'm flying to Bali on Christmas morning. I can hardly wait...but where to stay? Also, I've got 10 days and am likely to be bored with lying on a beach for that long, so I'd like to see some more of Indonesia. Got any suggestions?

Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali, & is up in the hills, away from the beach. It's easy enough to get a bus from Ubud to Kuta, Legian, Sanur, or Jimbaryan Bay. Beaches around Bali were not that great, imho. Lovina was more stones, than sand. The Gili Isles off Lombok were far superior. Just in front of the mosque on Gili Trawangan was the nicest beach I saw. Kuta Beach Lombok (NOT Bali) was also great, but difficult to reach, without hiring a vehicle.

Stay away from Kuta beach on Bali (as chris said, Lombok also has a Kuta). And Legians beach north of Kuta.

I didn't make it to the North side, but I hear the beaches are some of the best up there.

I also second Chris' Ubud recommendation. I rented a scooter there and toured different cities and mountains from Ubud.

Read Lonely Planet's Bali/Lombok book, it gives you all you need.
