First, yet another thing about Korean culture that I find baffling is coffee. I am working in a small town and at least here Koreans drink either very strong pre-packaged coffee shots with whitener, or very weak brewed coffee black. In fact, in most places here when you order coffee you receive it black and it can be just a little difficult with my limited Korean getting some cream, milk, or even whitener. I just don't understand. Now I can appreciate cultural differences but this one defies logic. Not only is it inconsistent but it is a polar opposite. But fine. I can accept it.

But the lady at the coffee shop I like to go to refuses to allow me to order coffee with a little bit of milk or cream because according to her it does not come with milk or cream. She keeps telling me to get a Latte or something with comes with milk. But I don't want anything frothy, just a damn coffee. I have even offered to pay a higher price, but oh no.

So it's on!!

I will keep you updated.

Fight the good fight!

I was amused yesterday, I ordered an espresso and the kid behind the counter felt the need to explain to me that an espresso is "a very strong and little drink." As if the foreign guy ordering an espresso had no idea what he was ordering. I know he was trying to be helpful, I just got a kick out of it.

Yes, it's kind of odd. I went to a Holly's Coffee and had to ask for milk after getting the coffee-I like sugar in it, but unless it's brown sugar it's nothing, and even brown sugar I'm a miser.

I went to a Dunkin Donuts by Juan Station, and the girl said, in pretty good English said "your coffee doesn't come with milk" and she was polite about it.

I politely replied "Give me my money back, please."

delicious coffee with milk. delicious delicious delicious

This is also a pet peeve of mine...

Next time you go in for a coffee, bring a small carton of milk (like the ones kids drink at school) and order your coffee black. Then, in front of the coffee lady, pour just a touch of milk in (or until desired beige-ness) to show her and leave the rest of the carton of milk with her. You could even have her taste the deliciousness of coffee with a splash of milk.

Put that shit on Youtube.

Yeah, Korean coffee is where American coffee was in the 70's and 80's. Instant is perfectly acceptable, diner stuff is weak and pissy, etc. It'll take time for the gourmet places popping up in Samcheon-dong and Apgujeon to start filtering out to the rest of the country.

What a disappointing thread!

I expected to read about some college student on a scooter fighting an ajosshi in his 40's.

This has been a 15 year pet peeve of mine . . . I just want (strong) coffee with cream. Is that so difficult? Even Starbucks is a crap shoot. Some Starbucks make it strong other places make weakcoffee flavored tea. I've actually resigned myself to ordering Lattes because they are strong and have cream. You all have my sympathy.
