I'm hoping we can share the movies that we've used in the classroom and comment on whether they were successful or not.

I used Meet Dave this week. The students really enjoyed it.
I was planning on using Nightmare Before Christmas but after watching it today with a Korean friend, I don't think I will. Most of the dialogue is sung and the overall speed was way too fast.

Finding Nemo was popular.
Chicken Little was popular.

One thing I found is that movies that work for American teenagers (don't know about others) are too mature for Korean teenagers. I thought School of Rock would go over well since it was a huge hit when I showed it to teenage students in the US. It fell flat for the most part. A good rule of thumb in my case is to find movies that are suitable for students 5 or 6 years younger. The ones that have gone over well for my high school students are:

She's the Man
HS Musical 1 and 2
Freaky Friday (they really enjoyed this one!)
Incredibles

For uni students I've shown, among many others..

Marty
Strictly Ballroom
That Thing You Do
12 Angry Men
Vertical Limit
Casablanca

with vocabulary and question sheets

The next three I showed after I had bounced off a car's fender and my teaching stamina was low. Just so I could sit down. (It was a Summer class, so who cared, the students loved them.)

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
It Happened One Night
The Maltese Falcon

Surprised they enjoyed the last one.

Think I'll give School Of Rock a go. Thanks

HS Musical I and II have been the most astounding hits with my students ever. Don't worry - you manage to block the obnoxious drivel out just like K-pop after a while.

I showed it to one vocational class and they liked it, but no where near as much as HS Musical. One student came in late and, observing the chaos going on in the opening scene, pointed at the screen and said 'hakyo???'.

Did you show High School Musical at a vocational school as well? I'm at one now. I don't know the movie but if you say it works for vocational students I'll have to find it and show it.

I work at a combined academic & vocational HS / regular MS and I've shown HS Musical to students ranging from brilliant to semi-retarded and grade 1 MS to grade 3 HS. Just about all of them have LOVED it.

Gabriella: a very smart student whom Troy loves.
Chad: also a star basketball player who is musically talented.
Zeek: another basketball player who loves to cook.
Kelsie: a composer and piano player.

Phrases:

1. What time is it? 해석: 몇 시 입니까?
2. Oopps, lets go. 해석: 이런!, 가자.
3. I have a summer job for you. 해석: 나는 너를 위한 여름 아르바이트를 알고있어

For my elementary kids I've used almost anything with Charlie Brown in it... Anytime the dialogue goes over their heads you can just pause and give a 20 second explaination in plain English...

I've also watched "How the Grich Stole Christmas" 7 times this week with my various grade 5s and 6s, lol...
