Why would anyone want to take the subway all that distance? Why not just a regular train?

Cheap.

But after 2.5 hours of smelly ajosshis, vocal salesmen, smelly ajosshis, and no drinks/toilets, I think I will take the train next time.

The 무궁화 (sp) train never costs more than 8,000 won if you're taking it locally. It only costs me around 3,000 to ride it from Suwon to Cheonan; and I always ride it from Suwon to Yongsan / Seoul Station when I go to Seoul. Always.

Why? Because it's fast (twice as fast) and more comfortable than the subway (even if you need to sit between the train cars). Well worth it.

Seoul Metro Lines Extended

Commuters can now travel from Seoul directly to the city of Asan in South Chungcheong Province by subway. Seoul Metro opened the extension for line one on Monday.
The commute takes about two hours from Seoul to the last stop at Shinchang station. The six new stations include Ssangyong, Asan and Onyang Oncheon. University students will benefit as most new stations are located close to college campuses.

Traffic between Cheonan and Asan, often heavy during rush hours, is also expected to be reduced as a result of the extension.

Lest we forget the blind, the beggers, and the news paper collectors? lol

The news paper collectors I didn't mind as they were performing something of a service. Could you imagine the subways if old poor people weren't cleaning them? If you can't imagine, come to Toronto. You should see the subways here in Toronto. Moving trash cans.

Has the TTC subways gotten that bad? Last time I rode them was back in 2000. I was actually pretty impressed at how clean it was. Cleaner than Montreal's system, and Montreal's system is clean too (well at least back in 2000)... the I come to Seoul, city with a metro population of around 20 million, I was just blown away at how it could be cleaner than TO's.

Yeah. It's getting bad. Budget cuts means cleaning has been cut. I thought Koreans were pigs leaving their trash everywhere but it seems a generation of Canadians has lost the "give a hoot don't pollute" ethic.

Here's an article that sums up the decay.

What pisses me off are the "taggers" have given up their black magic markers and have taken to carving their tags into the glass.

I would sometimes take the subway down to Bundang but quickly abandoned that when I discovered the red express buses. Maybe they're a bad choice for the rush hour commute but seems to me getting out to the outlying districts is quicker by bus than subway.

This is definitely good news for people living in Pyeongtaek (like me) or living in Cheonan (like my coteacher). The express train is excellent, only slightly higher cost and far faster/more comfortable ride. But there are times when the express train isn't available or is at capacity/sold out. It's nice to know the subway's there to fall back on.

TTC, what happened to you?

I guess this would be the same thing I would say:
"I still remember when those terrazzo floors used to shine, and I'm only in my 30s."

If I ever go back to TO, I'll be prepared for a shock.

Say more about this express train. Is it part of the subway, or is it a different train system?

A complaint I've had since I got here is that I have seen no subway express trains. So if I want to go a long distance across the city, I must make every stop in between. It is so that the express bus is faster than the subway to get downtown.

In New York, express subways skip many stops so that one can get far relatively fast. That a bus would be faster than an express train is almost unheard of there.

Instead of extending these lines to places perhaps better served by intercity trains, they should be adding express trains to already existing lines.
