What's up yall. Greetings from the USA. I am tossed on tequilla, how ya doin? haha
Well, I am thinking about going back to Korea. I taught in Korea for about 6 months earlier this ear, then my boss began trying to screw me out of money, the Korean won crashed in value, things in general started going a bit bad, so I left early and I left quick. I sort of got fired, and I sort of pulled a runner, it's a long story. The thing that made me decide to totally leave Korea was the depreciated won value. It was at about 1450 at that point so I just said Fck it, i'm getting outta here.
I've been back in the states for a couple of months now. It is nice here in many ways. It's clean, I understand the language, lots of great nature, all that stuff. I got myself a decent job, i'm living in a nice city. It is allright.
But wait, my job, which is a newspaper job, is about to be cut. That's right the paper is GOING BANKRUPT AND GOING UNDER, just like everything else in the USA..... I've got two weeks until my job is toast, I am about to be unemployed here. Groovy.
So here I am, about to be stuck in a new state with no job. Shall I begin working a crap job just to make some money? Shall I go through the long and tedious process of looking for another somewhat decent job (which in this economy is rough)? Shall I soak up the unemployment checks and be a straight up welfare scumbag? Shall I go live in my Mom's basement and be a mooch?
Or, shall I return to Korea? Yeah the won is in the toilet still, but it is starting to rise up again. It might just come back to a respectable level soon here. I find myself missing Korea in many ways. I am still very well aware of its bad sides, but, there is a lot that I miss about it.
I remember being so happy about leaving Korea when I made the decision to get out. I booked my ticket back to the US and I was stoked and excited about it.
Then, the day came to get on my flight. I packed my bags and walked out right at sunrise. I looked back at my apartment, at my neighborhood, and instead of jumping for joy, I realized I was going to miss it. I still remember every face I saw as I was leaving that morning, with all my luggage. I still remember the crisp autumn air, starting to get just a little cold after the summers heat. Without even trying, I let it all sink deeply into my consciousness, knowing that I might never return again.
Korea drives people a little crazy sometimes, but when you have some breathing room and step outside of the craziness, you realize that in some ways, Korea is a cool place. In some ways, Korea is a VERY cool place honestly. It offers a lot of things that the USA just cant provide for sure.
I don't know what i'm gonna do. I don't even know why i'm writing this post here. But it's probably because I am drunk out of my mind on Tequilla and I just got laid off for my job. The day the the newspaper is OVER. And I think I am gonna kiss my newspaper career goodbye after this final kick to the nuts from the world of journalism.
You think Korea is bad? Welcome to the New World Order in America. Jobs are getting slashed all over, things are bad over here. Let me be the first to say that America is about to go into a DEPRESSION. No not a recession, a depression.
In Korea, there is a HUGE number of teaching jobs to be had. You have health insurance. You get paid pretty decent money. And there are other perks to it. The job situation there is good. The job situation here.....it f*ckin blows. Bush really drove this country into the ground.
I am really close to signing another contract over there..... Drink a soju with me. Cheers. |

I love how you wrote the following when you left Korea SIX WEEKS AGO:

Everything is great here in the US. I'm telling you, people on this website really overexagerate how difficult it is to get a good job in America. I just moved to the city I like with my degree, resume, and a few contacts, without anything really set in stone. And it worked out great.
I think that a lot of people who say that there are no good jobs in America are being too picky, or they are noobs to the American job market and can't handle it. Yes, getting a good job in America is a lot more competetive and difficult than the red carpet treatment you get in Korea. But there is a ton of opportunity here. |

OP, did you have blinders on about the state of the U.S. economy before you made the decision to throw in the towel just a couple of months ago?
I remember that you used to talk about the devalued won at length as to being one of your biggest factors in leaving, but come on, were you not paying attention to what was going on back there?
You are not enlightening anyone as to that aspect of America.
I hope things work out for you. Korea isn't that bad of an option after all, given the alternative, huh? |

I landed a prety good newspaper job, which was another big factor for me coming back here.
But now that job is gone. Newpapers across the US are going under. They arent hiring and are usually firing.
I was hoping that this particular job would last me at least a year. Nope, the paper is folding after me being there for just a month and a half. So now I need to rethink my options.
I threw in the towel for good reason too. My hagwon was corrupt. But I learned a lot from that. |

That has been a trend for a good while now. It is not a new phenomenon.
Come on back to Korea if you can. What is your visa status? |
