FUNNYMAN EDDIE MURPHY will play The Riddler in the next Batman movie, The Sun can reveal.
The Beverly Hills Cop star, 47, has been signed up by British director CHRISTOPHER NOLAN to reprise the role played by JIM CARREY in 1995s Batman Forever.

Gotham villain ... Eddie Murphy

The surprise move follows speculation linking Pirates of the Caribbean star JOHNNY DEPP to the part.

The film, set for a 2010 release, is being developed under the working title Gotham.

Execs have also signed up rising Transformers star SHIA LABEOUF, 22, to play Robin.

CHRISTIAN BALE will return as Bruce Wayne, while MICHAEL CAINE will again play Bruces assistant Alfred.

Meanwhile, Brit RACHEL WEISZ is said to be up for the Catwoman role.

Insiders also revealed to The Sun the flick will end on a cliffhanger over whether Batman survives a blast at Wayne Towers.

Nolan had been tight-lipped about the future of the Batman films after being rocked by the January death of HEATH LEDGER tipped to receive a posthumous Oscar for his role as The Joker in Batman Returns.

A film insider said: Chris wasnt sure if he wanted to do another movie but as soon as he decided to, he got the wheels in motion.

Eddies a fantastic addition. Everyones excited to see what he does as the Riddler.

Well, there goes that franchise.

Unless Eddie Murphy tells riddles and jokes like he did in his stand-up movie "Raw" and unless Robin gets killed 5 minutes after his introductory role, it's going to be hard to make this movie compare to the first 2.

The franchise is now officially dead. Not so much because of Shia (who I can't really stand anyway), but because they couldn't just leave well enough alone and keep it about Batman. Why introduce Robin?

On another note, as long as he plays the role straight and not go off the deep end like Carrey, I think Murphy could surprise. He's got a lot to measure up to with Heath's performance... he can't possibly think he can camp it up like Carrey and get away with it. He has to play it straight.

that's what everyone said when Heath Ledger as Joker was first announced. I hope Charlie Murphy has a cameo, he's funnier.

You got me thinking, Young Frank...wouldn't it be even awesomer if Chapelles' Prince played the Riddler?

I hope they cast an adult with Down's Syndrome as Robin.

Eddie Murphy's come a long way from picking-up transvestite hookers.

I guess totally devoting himself to kids movies (Nutty Prof., Dr. Doolittle, various cartoon voice roles) for a decade washes off the dirt.

By the way, what do the following super hero characters have in common?

Catwoman
Nick Fury
The Kingpin
Alicia Masters
The Riddler

All were originally white characters and have been portrayed by people of African descent on film (and on occasion, in the comics as well - the 'Ultimate' Nick Fury was modeled on Sam Jackson, who I believe also played him in Iron Man, but I have not watched it).
