I'm not a super fan of animation, but I like it and I thought I'd start a thread so that I could find some cool stuff to check out.

These are my picks so far for both animation and story....

Wall-E
I really like Wall-E, didn't stray too far from the Disnet formula, but nice film with nice visuals.

Ghost in the Shell
Calssic anime, really cool story line and pretty spacey Japanese visuals.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oP2Pt6m3yKU
There is also a TV show which I haven't watched yet.

Akira
coolest motorbike scenes in animation and a real classic of the anime genre
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZg8XYJ-bTE

The Incredibles
Really funny....I think everyone knows this one. Loved it, watched it three times (and I never watch animation more than once)

Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series
The movie was rotten but at 25 minutes a show with a long story line it seems to work in a TV show. Graphics are a little childish but the scenery presented is fantastic. Very colourful and lively. Lucas seems to suck at story telling these days, but his scenery and sense of place is really great. It's a real larger than life universe even though the dialogue and rehash of lines like "I don't like the sound of this" is horrible. Light amusement on my Ipod while on the train.

Happy Tree Friends
Sick, sick little show....I love this show.

Afro Samurai
Samual L Jackson does the voice for this cool little piece of anime.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rf7P_he83I

last but not least

The Maxx
from the mid 90's in the US, a strange little tale with really cool visuals

Aaagh! It's the Mr. Hell Show!
Only one season made, but it's like Monty Python meets Ren and Stimpy. Awesome.

Maxx is bloody ingenious.

Saw it as a kid. It was just so surreal... The visuals like you said are amazing and the plot is just... mind bending. Scares the crap out of you too. The little blooby things are cute but sadistic in this weird synthetic way. The ending was... just so weird. I think it was very worng, I'll have to wikipedia it up again.

Good list so far!
I add...
Star Blazers!
Best TV show theme song ever.

Fist of the North Star!
Stupidest ultra violence ever...not the live action, the old pre-CGI animation. It's INSANELY stupid and awesome.

Sample dialogue:
Lord Jaggy: I am Lord Jaggy. I will be Fist of the North Star. You cannot stop me, Ken.
Ken Yes, I can. I am FIST OF THE NORTH STAR, not you! And now...(punches him like 84 times, super fast...) Ki-ki-ki-ki-ki-ki-ki-kiiii-YAAAAAAIIIIIIIIII!!!!
Lord Jagy: You didn't hurt me. I am Lord Jaggy!
Ken: You're already dead, Jaggy. You just don't know it yet.
Lord Jaggy: Huh? But...(head starts bulging hidesously, eyeballs start popping out, arteries burst; tries to stave off the Dreaded Fist of the North Star Pressure Point Attack by punching himself in the opposite pressure points; fails; explodes in a shower of ichor...) Noooooooooooooo.

Oh yeah, Castle of Cagliostro is pretty cool too. Very silly, very very old, but has some good visuals. All hand-drawn.

I guess Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle are pretty good too.

Thanks. That made my day. Furthermore, I'd just like to say:

Guy w/nunchucks: Hey! I thought you was a girl! Either way - ya die!"
Rei: I disagree. I think you are the one who's about to die. In fact there's no... doubt... ABOUT IT!" (Proceeds to cut of the guys arms somehow without touching him)

Not sure if it was intentional, but those are all by the same director/studio. Hayao Miyazaki and Ghibli Studio. They also did Nausicaa, Laputa, Spirited Away and a few others, all of which were awesome.

Oh? cool, I didn't know the old 'Lupin' cartoons were from Miyazaki as well.
('Cagliostro's the only really good one anyway.)
One good thing about those ones is they don't have any exploding heads or tentacle rape, so they're okay to watch in mixed company. When I was teaching kids I'd sometimes show them on movie days.
(Not that tentacle rape is ever something to be watched...wtf is up that sh*t, anyway?)

Wall-E is a masterpiece. Not a 'cartoon', but still animation.
