Thankfully I didn't hear anything about this 'workshop' from my co-teacher, so I was more than happy not to attend.

One thing that I think WOULD be helpful at these events is a demo on how to use Powerpoint to create various activities. How to make games, how to use the tools to make an interesting Ppt flashcard type resource, etc.
I know the basics, but I'm sure there is a hell of a lot I could do with it that I've yet to learn.

I would also love to see videos FT's have made with their students. Songs, plays, etc ... and taking footage from a camera onto the computer to edit, to add music to and so on.

Finally, I'd like to see a collection of ESL books that people would recommend and why. Books people have a preference for using with low level kids, parents, etc.

... And on a sidenote .. Ilsanman .. when do we get to see an updated photo of bubs? Wink

These workshops are never designed with the actual needs of foreign teachers in mind. That's a secondary concern.
They seem to be designed by someone with the attitude- "What do we want to tell (or not tell) the foreign teachers and what do we want them to believe?"

Darren - He made it plain at the first GEPIK conference I attended in October during his presentation that he doesn't paticulary like GEPIK teachers - doesn't hang around them outside working hours (because we complain too much) his social circle is completely Korean and thats great!
But is he the right person to give a lecture about how we should act within the system?

He actually said, in front of GEPIK teachers, that he doesn't like GEPIK teachers?

Quote:

I remember a person standing up after his presentation to complain about the shoebox they were put in and Darren shouts from the front 'good attitude yeah' like the guy was a bit of a prat or something. We have to remember that Darren Ng is a GEPIK man through and through - if you got him one on one and aired your greviances about the system you can bet your life that he would be all Korean about your complaints and blame it on (your) 'cultural differences'

Nice attitude. Rolling Eyes

COMPLETE MISCHARACTERIZATION!

I don't know which GEPIK orientation you attended Bogey (I was at the October one) and Darren Ng cleary said that he has no western friends or friends who teach EFL because they complain and whine too much - it is exactly what he said - then he went onto say that all his social circle were Korean - it might not mean that 'EFL teachers in Korea are a bunch of crybabies and wankers' but it certainly sounded like it.

As for the chap who complained about his shoebox - Darren Ng turned around and goes 'yeah - nice attitude' and goes on to tell a war story about living in a broom cupboard - again - it sounded from where I am standing that Darren was trying to put the complainer in his place. I may be wrong and maybe someone else who was at the October GEPIK meeting could voice their opinion on it.

Was there in October. Agree totally on both points. The latter...well it was a little dressed up in 'be positive, there's somebody worse than you whereever you go' stuff but def was not supportive.

They were talking or arguing with the speakers?

They were making snide/obnoxious comments DURING the presentations. The whole audience couldn't hear them, but anyone sitting around them (like me) had to put up with listening to it.

If the person bitching about it didn't like people making snide comments, why did he not tell them to be quiet and show some respect?

Did Dain Bae at least talk about the contract, either trying to cheat teachers out of things or explain it?

If I was there I definitely would have brought up a few things. GEPIK needs to show that it actually cares about teachers.

One of the other ladies spoke about the contract. She spoke for about 10 minutes, glossed over a few things and then said we have no more time. Didn't even take 1 question.

actually the person sitting next to me did turn around and in a very courteous tone asked them to please keep it down. I then heard them snigger awkwardly amongst themselves for a minute or so but discontinued to annoying chatter.

I think these workshops are made just so the higher ups can see which foreign teachers are most likely to complain. I don't think they intend to change anything. If they do change anything its usually for the worst for everyone. If someone complains about their vacation schedule they don't give that person more they just take time away from everyone esle to make it appear fair.

Complaining about your job or working conditions is looked down upon in Korean society. Espicially if you are the youngest staff member then you're viewed as a spoiled brat who hasn't taken the time to learn about Korean culture. I think they try to weed out the people who complain. Either that or transfer them to the sticks where they are forced to live in a dormatory.

It's best to put your time in and then don't attend these things. I've never learned anything useful at them.

Wait, so pointing out how people were acting rude and immature during a presentation is "bitching?"

And for your information, they eventually quit, which eliminated the need to further interrupt the speaker. The fact that grown-ass, university graduate teachers would act like the very 6th graders that they kept "bitchin" about was what really bothered me.

So basically what you are saying is that you sat their gritted your teeth and mumbled to yourself because you were too scared to tell them to be quiet.

Small shriveled up walnut sack you have there.
