I visited Vladivostok for 10 days in the past....it was one of the few times I was VERY thankful to be WHITE...first time to really blend in! (Usually its the opposite and the white (i.e. guy with assumed $) attracts those without $.

There were an exceptional amount of thugs and brutish looking characters with the snearing eyes around...but I just blended in, got my beer, and sat on benches like everyone else, looking like a part of the scenery. Very interesting, and I kept thinking this is one place I'm glad I'm white. Not that people would want something from me, but more because they just had the brute look, and the looking to fight look.

The few times I did announce myself, usually by speaking English trying to order something from a kiosk, people were fairly receptive to the American in Vladivostok. I did see a few Asian-Russians around, but not nearly as many as I anticipated...there were Chinese tourists around, and they seemed fine. Some of them picked out the best looking blonds to pose with them for photos...lol. But as dusk hit, and people got drunk off their asses, it was pretty much just me with successful attempts to blend in among many Russians, and I never saw tourists around after dark.

I did meet one half black/white American guy...he'd lived there for years...I never inquired if he had problems or not....I'd imagine some, but not enough to leave, as he'd been there years. I believe he's actually married now.

The Korean-Russians that I have encountered in Busan seem to be very big, as in football offensive line big, much bigger than me. Maybe the young Korean-Russian population encounters with Russians in Vladivostok have been rough and they try to bulk up as much as possible. Just a theory.

Vladivostok has its problems for sure. There are water shortages, electricity shortages, shortages of fruit and vegetables, heating systems that regularly misfunction, high pollution including radioactive debris, a fairly high level of crime, significant unemployment, low wages, severe weather with bone chillind cold for most of the year, mafia control of rents/cars/public services/hotels, rusting navy ships in the harbour, mandatory conscription for males, the list goes on.

With such an environment of course people drink and smoke heavily. Depression and suicide rate is high. It goes with the territory.

Of course to white western persons it seems harsh. There are no McDonalds, Walmarts, KTXs, Starbucks or neon lights in Vladivostok. Yet. (There will be soon enough, sadly).

For some that is probably their attraction in going there.

Just finished watching Ross Kemp's On Gangs episode on Neo-Nazis in Russia.

Funny how they call people from the former Soviet Republics "blacks".

It was quite depressing to see how angry these Russians were and how violent they could be. Pretty dark stuff. Shocked

Soviet Man is the Russian version of a dumb-ass Korean apologist.

"They only live on $500 a month so you can't blame them"

Rolling Eyes

Give me a break. That's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard on this board and as we all know there are a lot of stupid things said here from day to day.

I've lived in Vladivostok, and I agree that blaming Russians' racism on their average income in dollars is pretty superficial. The dollar value of my salary has fallen 30% in a matter of months but I haven't taken that as license to behave 30% more hatefully. I loved a lot of things about Russia but some things have a long way to go

1)work visa
2)$3,000 a month.
But fat chance of that anytime soon.

Nobody from the civilised world would want to come to Russia, if it were not for the WOMEN!!!

Myself included!

Very Happy

But thank GOD for Russian women! And I'm an atheist.

I'm an average guy, yet I've dated models (no lie!).
I'm 29 years old, yet I routinely get phone numbers from 18 year old girls in night clubs.

Very Happy

So, how are you feeling in Korea right now?

What is that supposed to mean?

You were essentially defending some Russians violent actions based on the fact that many of them are poor and have rough social conditions.

Why would you defend violence and suggest that we should try to "understand" them.

I don't want to get involved in the argument, but this reminds me of a line from Batman Begins:

"Criminals thrive on society's 'understanding.'"
