So I have a couple of London Fog (one long, one short) raincoats with a liner type coats - but it's kind of cold now and I'm looking to buy a nice cashmere/wool blend real winter coat - the kind you can wear with a suit.

Any ideas? Don't want to shop in the department stores, those prices are ridiculous.

I found a ralph lauren 80% wool 20% cashmere online for 165 bucks, 65% off the original price - but with shipping and all that waiting, it'll be March before I get it, IF I get it at all...knowing how this postal system works. Razz

All comments welcome. Flamers too. Let's have fun!

PS - I wear a 44 Regular if you have one for sale btw Wink

Depends on your skin tone really...ask the sales girl(ask a couple) to see which color best suits you.

As for shipping....shipping has been fairly fast on all the items I got sent from America...less than a week...get the ralph lauren coat....good price.

You could have one tailor made at a reputable bespoke place in Itaewon. The mail system isnt that bad here. I always received my packages from abroad and my sent packages always arrived.

Got a Iink to one of these coats? I'm guessing bIack or dark bIue wouId aIways work. They have that dark, mysterious vibe. Tan coIoured coats put me in mind of fIashers.

But if fIashing's your thing pooty pants then go tan!

I hate Korean men's fashion, especially in formal wear. But the Korean coats are actually quite nice. Except for T-Shirts (undershirts), socks, some tailored clothes, two formal coats are all of the Korean clothes that I own. One is a short wool coat, and one is a long cashmere coat, similar to the one that you linked to.

The problem is, they're overpriced here. If you can wait it out, the department stores have clearance sales at the end of winter, and winter sales towards the end of fall. My wool coat was originally priced at 550,000 won, but I got it for 80,000; and my full length cashmere was 600k down to 110k.

Another option is tailoring. The tailors in Itaewon are great at copying. They also have fabric for custom coats. Come out the exit near Hamilton Hotel heading towards Yongsan Garrison and look for GG Kang. They're good, and reasonably priced. Wear a suit, or whatever you expect to be wearing with your coat and have them measure you and quote a price. If they don't have the fabric you like in stock, PM me. I know a guy who knows the guy.

A third option is Hong Kong. Everything is cheap there. If you want to shop, bring some money. Your airfare will be covered by the savings you'll have compared to shopping here.

And as for color, I suggest gray. Gray goes with black, blue, tan, pretty much everything but brown. You can only do blue if you're British. A dark brown with squares could look nice, too, depending on what another poster mentioned, your skin tone as well as your eye and hair color.

If you go silver, I will seriously find someone to hack this site, find you, and punch you in the face. Hard.

Good luck!

The best place to buy a cashmere overcoat is probably back in your home country in January. With the economy this bad, I bet you could get a cashmere overcoat for 75% off in the Winter clearance sales. Of course, this probably won't be an option for you.

I would go for a tailor in Itaewon. I have a friend who got one using Zegna fabric at a great price. It'll be one of the best investments you ever make.

For color, I would start off with either charcoal or navy blue. Personally, I find navy suits me the best but everyone prefers a different color. Never start with black unless you have the other colors (charcoal, navy, camel, gray) already and you need an overcoat for evening wear (wearing a tuxedo).

I love Zenga fabric. I didn't think it was available in Korea!

And I agree with the charcoal color. I have two charcoal suits, and I love them both. You don't see too many charcoal topcoats though. At least I don't. I usually see black, dark blue or camel/tan.

Victor, can you ask your friend about the details of his coat? Where was the shop, how much, directions, etc.?

suadente: Don't worry, I wouldn't be caught dead wearing silver! hahaha

skin color: I have olive skin, dark hair and brown eyes.

Most of the tailors in Korea carry imported fabric but it costs you an arm and a leg. For example, a suit made with Zegna or Loro Piana wool might be double the cost of a suit made from Samsung fabrics.

I asked my friend and he got two overcoats made at Hahn's (in Itaewon) a few years ago. The first was a cashmere overcoat made with Zegna fabric and it was a million won. That's really a steal and he said the tailor was able to procure the fabric at a sale. I'm not sure if you would be able to get the same deal today. He was happy with it but said the shoulders were about an inch too wide and he didn't like the padding much. He made a note of it when he got his second overcoat made and was happy with the results. The second one was made from Samsung fabric and was around 550.

I like to time my trips back home in January so I can take advantage of the warm weather and get winter clothes at a bargain.
