Yes - anything listed as over $150 in value will be taxed.
20% I believe is the going rate.
Get your mom or a friend to bring it when they come to visit. |

Do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not ever, under any circumstances, ship a laptop. If you absolutely *must* ship a laptop, FedEx and UPS will *not* insure it unless it is shipped in its original carton with all original packing materials intact. You will need to insure it for its replacement value, and if customs decides that you lied on your Carriage Value, then a value will be assigned to the item and you will be charged duty. Since the item is classified as electronics, even for personal use, the Country of Origin of the laptop as well as the Country of Manufacture must be listed on the Customs Declaration.
For the love of god, DO NOT ship a laptop. Please. Buy the same laptop here and swap hard drives. I can almost guarantee you that the laptop will not arrive in the same condition it left. Two contracting firms ago, their corporate policy was that if a laptop was needed in the field, it was sent with a human to the job site. I saw laptops shipped at that company maybe four times during my six years there.
Don't do it, man. It's not worth it. |

did you want to ship a new one or a prior owned one?
(1) if you've been in K less than 6 months, you can write a letter that states such and that this is part of your personal belongings that are being moved with you here and should be considered as such and therefore not liable for import fees.
I did that 1 year ago - my dad shipped it to me - we used FedEx and when customs called I prepared the letter and faxed it to them along with the page in my passport which showed I had just returned to K (then it was about a month prior). I was not charged a fee and yes, we insured the package for $2500 (MacBook Pro)
(2) buying one and importing it is a different story because you will be charged import fees which can be astronomical. if you can afford to buy one here and don't mind the K keyboard, go ahead, you can have an E OS put on w/o any problem.
all this being said, a lot of times it's really just up to the people in customs and what kind of day they are having as far as how cooperative they will be.
good luck. |
