The Patriot Act, aside from the obvious civil rights issues, is a failure because it's akin to hurrying to shut the barn door after the horses have already escaped into the hills. The bad guys simply have no further need to attack the US at home. Bin Laden's mission was to draw the US into a protracted war in Afghanistan where he believed he could hemorrhage the US Treasury for as long as it takes to bankrupt us. His strategy relies upon home advantage, unlimited time, an endless supply of idealistic cannon fodder from Pakistan and elsewhere, and the American public's opposition to a draft. I doubt he expected Bush to invade Iraq, but Bush's decision to do so sure did take a lot of pressure off the so-called "mujahideen" in Afghanistan while adding pressure to our military and an immeasurable burden to our treasury (taxpayers).

The Patriot Act doesn't cost bin Laden or the Taliban one penny, but the costs (without even factoring in the cowardly surrender of our priceless civil rights) have been enormous and add to the stress on the taxpayers in America.

US military spending including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is less as a percentage of GDP than it was in the 1980s.

Even with the Patriot act the US is one of the most free and tolerant nations in the world. To make a comparison South Korea's national security laws are far tougher . The Patriot act doesn't cost the US government a lot. 9-11 on the other hand cost the US between 100 billion and several trillion dollars. In fact basically the Patriot act empowers the government to go after terrorists the same way it already can against organized crime. The best reason for the Patriot act isn't fear it is justice. Preventing AQ from getting what they want is justice. The US justice system as it was wasn't up to dealing with Al Qaeda that was the opinion of Bill Clintons' national security advisor.

Since 9-11 no attacks in the US.

But it is not like Al Qaeda is trying to give up attacking the US or other nations.

Well, let's employ the Sharkey test.

Has America invaded your country?

If not, it cannot be your enemy. Rolling Eyes

This position and not only the words Sharkey employs to articulate them, but the way he typed them onto his keyboard and thus the way they appear to us here as well, reflect everything that is wrong in university educations -- AKA brainwashing -- today.

If America represents your enemy, Sharkey, then nothing is keeping you from flying to Afghanistan or Iraq and securing an AK and joining the fight. Better yet, go to the United States and become the next T. McVeigh...

Meanwhile, why not change your name her to "Tom Tuttle from Tacoma?" You sway that easily, my friend.

Nah, he's 22 and has it all figured out. Leave the poor guy alone. Rant on Sharkey tell us how the evil U.S. has made the world a more dangerous place for you and threatens you here in South Korea.

I think Skynet is due to come on line in 2012 so the whole terrorist threat is moot.

Sharkey, I think you are seeking employment in the wrong country. The one you want is north of the 38th parallel. Good luck up there. At least you will both agree on who your enemies are.

Is a Canadian nationalist gloating over the failure of Afghanistan?

Oh, sharkey, you are a constant source of amusement.

If Sharkey is actually Canadian I'm taking that patch OFF my backpack.

If however, he is a pretty daft American trying to portray the average Canadian university graduate as a reactionary, hypocritical, unenlightened, total intellectual lightweight....Well done sir! Smile
