Starting in January, my school wants me to start teaching a special class in addition to my normal schedule that would run from 1-2:20pm four days a week. Normally, my workday starts at 2pm, with classes beginning at 2:30. Obviously this adds about 5 1/2 hours to my weekly workload. Additionally, in my contract, it states that the hours are to be from 2-9:30. However (and this is where it gets tricky), as of September, the final period of the day got cancelled, so everyone goes home at 8pm instead of 9:30.

I was wondering if I should ask for more money if they want me to teach this class. On the one hand, I would be working earlier than is specified in my contract. On the other hand, I am currently not working the full hours specified in my contract (although none of the teachers work until 9:30; everyone goes home at Cool.

What do you guys think?

Don't get greedy. I'd say that in reality, you just had a slight schedule adjustment which actually favors you (granted, it may not feel like it because you were working less hours than contracted from Sep through Dec). No sense in rocking the boat if your not actually working more hours than you were contracted to. If you do end up having to start staying to 9:30 and they don't puch back your start time, I would check your contract to see what your OT policy is and then start politely asking questions. In my opinion, its not worth creating a potential conflict, but I don't know how well your particular boss would react to you bringing up the issue.

Well, I decided to test the waters here. I told my head-teacher that if they were going to ask me to come in early for extra classes, I would have to ask them for 100,000w extra per week. That might be high, but I figure they're easily making 10x that amount from the classes, and I'd be happy with a lower amount. She didn't seem upset, but she told me she would have to speak to the boss.

I figure one of three things will happen:

1) They will agree
2) They will counter-offer with a lower amount
3) They will point out that I currently don't work as many hours as my contract specifies and tell me to STFU.

I'm hoping for options 1 or 2.

It never hurts to ask, I guess it really just depends on the relationship you have with the higher powers at your school and how you go about asking.

Hope it works out in your favor. Good luck.

may i suggest an option 4?

4. they are royally pissed and decide that all the teachers should remain until 9:30... although you will get your extra 100,000 a week

If they are asking you to come in earlier and it's outside of your contracted hours they need to pay you OT.

How it works for me. I start a class at 8:15 that is outside contracted hours, I get paid for the hour worked.

The OP works at a hogwan, not a public school. The schedule in a hogwan is and must be much more flexible than at a PS.

One of the other foreign teachers (not the head teacher or boss) talked to me today. Apparently the boss called him about my request to ask some questions. It looks like they're going to point out to me that I currently don't work from 8-930 as in my contract, but it doesn't look like I offended them at all by making the request.

So I figure I'll just inform them that a big factor in my taking the job was the 2pm start time, point out the inconvenience to my schedule in coming in earlier and drop my request to 50,000w a week. If they still say no, I'll just smile and deal with it, but I really don't think I'm losing anything by asking.

What are they going to get you to do for this time? That's my question. I'd take the extra work and the extra pay. It's their problem to fill out your schedule.

No, they aren't going to extend my hours at all. They're just going to point this out to me while attempting to deny my request for more money to come in earlier.

I'd say I can't come in early and I'd go home at 9:30. If they want to kick me out the door at eight, that's their problem. If they can't pay you, and want to change your contract anyway, what are you getting? Maybe they can offer some other perk. What''s your apartment like?

It's a tiny piece of shit apartment, but it's so close to the school that I'd rather not move.

Hopefully they'll just give in and let me have the extra money, even if it's a lesser amount.
