While there is the possibility of ending up in a bad hogwan job, I think it is much better than staying in a public school if one is unhappy with their present school. I was in a GEPIK school, and I was miserable. So, I went back to a hogwan.
Daammnn a public school. |

| Unless you're with SMOE, if you give them 30-days' notice they should give you a letter of release to cancel your visa and then you're free to get another job. |

| There are other public schools you could work for. But work at a hogwan for the same pay and more working hours and even more chances of being ripped off and trodden upon? Smart. |

My understanding was that with the Public school system, you didn't have a real choice in placement. So, it could be a crap shoot. But, as Hang10 said, he is in the country, and can do the research necessary to find a decent hogwan. Not all are bad. In fact, I have heard many people praise the hogwans they work at.
Hang10, give the proper notice, and be done with the school. You don't need to wait any time to move on to another job. They must cancel your visa, and if they don't, simply go to immigration and say that you quit. They will give you an exit order.
I would get all your paperwork in order now, so that you can transition easily. Some immigration offices are asking people to submit a new background check, while others accept the fact that you already submitted one. I hired a teacher who had submitted one previously, and the Sejogno immi office didn't ask us to submit a second one. |

I don't think that's true.
it IS true if you apply with GEPIK or SMOE or EPIK offices directly.
but why do THAT?
frankly that's about the most moronic and idiotic move I can think of.
There are LOTS of public school jobs being advertised by recruiters including here on Dave's. In fact, that's how I found my current job.
The recruiter told me the basic deal... then in my "interview" with the Korean coteacher/coordinator, I asked some more questions and was told a little more.
Finally, I asked for a way to contact the current FT at the school and received his e-mail and we communicated (he was very helpful)
so to the extent that you can know... I kind of knew what I was getting into. (especially for a newbie to Korea)
applying to a regional office as a piece of meat and a number "to be placed" is just flat out insane!!
Had I not found this gig, I would have gone to work for a hogwan in Incheon... One of the teachers there was in charge of recruiting, hiring for the spot and he was helpful in his answers and even provided some pictures of the school and his appt.
that's not to say I'm telling the OP not to go to work in a hogwan. That's his choice and the pluses and minuses have been listed here countlessly. |

| I certainly could be wrong, I was only going off what some people who work at SMOE told me. A friend had asked to be placed in a certain location, because it was close to his apartment. It turned out that someone else got that position, someone who didn't have an apartment, and then the school had to go out and find an apartment for him. Luckily, my friend did get a position that wasn't too far from his apartment, 20 minutes by subway. |

no, you're not "wrong".. I think you are right... IF someone simply applies with SMOE, GEPIK or EPIK and throws their name into a proverbial bucket.
(and from what I've read here, SMOE is by far the worst)
it just seems to me that if you're going to work at a public school, if you apply directly/thru a recruiter you can find out much more about the school in question.
in fact, I was ready to go work at the hagwon, but noticed an ad on Dave's from a clever recruiter who advertised the aspects of the job that are "better" than the standard gepik contract.
as has been stated, there are shitty public schools just as there are shitty hagwons. Why put your fate in the hands of a big bureaucracy? |

A public school won't transfer your visa sponsorship to a hogwon. You will have to resign and have your school cancel your visa. Then you will have to have your hogwon sponsor a new visa.
Public schools will transfer a visa to another public school. Try another program such as SMOE. |

EPIK would have transferred me to another EPIK school, but they were going to force me to sign another contract. Once you've been at a really horrible public school it is very hard to decide to try again. I would... but ONLY because I had a great camp experience at a different school so I KNOW there are good schools and that isn't just the way it is. (Or all my fault.) Without that, there would be no way. |
