They said I would be working 7-11am and 6-10pm (40hrs/week) plus TWO Saturdays a month @ 6 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND guess what...They don't even pay your apartment, just give you 100,000
I mean, come on people...It must be the desperate teachers who keep these companies screwing the life out you for every hour they can get. If the teachers all said NO WAY, then they would have to give better terms surely. No?
I mean are the saturdays included in the basic 2.5m salary or are the Saturdays OVERTIME pay? |

I know of a few people who have worked part time for Pagoda as a side job in the evening or morning on top of the hagwon/PS job but don`t know anyone doing it FT. You must be a mug to work full time on those terms for a crap salary and spit shift hours. I`m sure there are people out there who do it though. |

The teachers that work there got suckered. The all posted something like:
Quote: |
I would like to move to Korea and teach at a company )eg Samsung, Hyundai, LG etc....
Can someone get me a sponsor with flight and accommodation?
|
Someone replied with something like?
Quote: |
I can help you out, but first I'll need you to wire $5,000 to my account. When you arrive at the airport, I'll refund the money and take you to your new, 2 bedroom, 60 pyung apartment in Apgujeong.
|
Unfortunately they were misled and ended up at Pagoda. But I'm sure someone as savvy as you are OP would never get taken like this and will be making 천만원 a month tutoring the daughter of Samsung's CEO in no time.

When I worked for them, Saturdays were paid extra; you were paid 40% of each student's tuition. |

So can you give me ball park figure of what you earned on a Saturday? Is there any other overtime available between the split shifts?
Cheers for your advice man. |

It all depended on how many students signed up. This was several years ago, but IIRC, students paid W80,000 for a Saturday class, so you got 32,000 per student. If there were fewer than 4 students in the class, they canceled it, so you made between 128,000-384,000 for a Saturday class (well, not A Saturday class, but total for the 4 classes you would teach that month). Back then, Saturday classes were 100% voluntary (before they pulled the "sign this new contract or you're fired" BS).
As for other OT, I never worked a split shift except for my first month there, but if I ever wanted "OT" (no such thing) I just told the head teacher to schedule me for a couple more classes, plus I would sign up for as many interview hours as possible. I was a PIP teacher, so those classes were an extra W1,500 per hour on top, too. |

MH you obviously don't know that:
I mean teaching business English to adults is supposed to be a HIGH BROW job.It is supposed to attract good quality teachers.
and that:
PS is supposed to be the craap anyone-can-do, low-pay, 20somethin britney spears type teech job, innit?
The Op is way ahead of the game. He thinks that teaching at Pagoda is "high brow".
What's your business background and teaching experience/credentials OP? |

That's me. And it's true.
Not saying all Pagodas do that, or all teachers can do it. But I do.

I think the delusional people are the ones that believe there are good teaching jobs in Korea, as if Hagwons, PS, are somehow better than Pagoda. Hagwons can be a nightmare with screaming kids, know it all managers, broken contracts, pompous ritual, and an unmotivated teaching audience. I hear PS are not much better.
Yes I accepted a job with Pagoda. Yes I know it's less money. Yes it's split shift. But they agreed to a six month contract, which is how long I want to stay. If I don't have a class, I can do as I please. And I don't have to worry about getting paid. If I enjoy Pagoda even a little bit more than working at a Hagwon, then it would have been worth it to give up a little salary. To me, it's crazy that people come here just to make money. These are all low paying jobs, certainly someone with a BA can make more money back home.
It's not all about making money for some people, like me. That's how they get people to accept these crazy contracts. |
