| I'm guessing this is a simple question for you tech geniuses out there. I bought a portable hard drive and it came with a USB cable that, on one end, has two full size USB plugs separated by about four inches of cable . Only one plug seems to do anything. What is the other one for? |

In some cases where one USB doesn't provide enough power for the HDD to function, you gotta plug the 2nd one in. Or, what I like to call HDD-DP |

it's when you want to transfer data from one computer to another.
the longer cord is the main cord the "from" one and the shorter cord is the "to" cord.
(I think that's right if not just switch them)
like when you need to reformat a drive, so you can transfer all your stuff to another drive first.
when you are just using it for other reasons, like to download films or something, it's just an extra limb. |

What are you on about moosehead? The above makes no sense - it is for extra power. Do you own a portable HDD? The OP is referring to a USB Y cable.

| Well, most of what I've seen on the web seem to imply that it's for extra power. The extra head is probably only wired for power and not data. |
