| I'm going to China for Lunar New Year and I'm wondering how expensive it will be to eat and be entertained there. Does anyone have any experience with China? What can I (and my small crew) expect? |

If you're going to be in a big city expect it to be deserted and for lots of shops/restaurants/tourist areas to be closed. Everyone goes home for New Year's.
There will still be plenty to do and see, you're just going to be restricted. I know I went to Beijing during lunar new year last (this) year. |

Where in China are you going?
I just got back from Beijing and was amazed at some of the prices.. but it had been 8 years since I last went. Some stuff is still cheap.
As for lunar new year, I am told normally they charge double SERVICE CHARGE and not the food itself ...but I don't know... I am going to be in HK, where charging double SvC during this period is the norm. |

| I went to Beijing last year and found it to be failry inexpensive. Two of us ate at Outback for about $24. The same in Korea would have been around $40. You can buy Bejing duck fairly cheap also. Just depends on where you go. And remember to haggle the price on products. You can probably go down about 30% of what they charge. |

| I'm going to Shanghai for 3 days. Still have to get a hotel but that shouldn't be a problem. I just don't want to go with 1.5m won worth of their money and come to find out it a cheeseburger is going to run me 100,000 won. |

| Shanghai is cheap if you eat chinese and drink tsindao for 3 rmb a bottle or you can eat western and drink 100 rmb beers in night clubs. |

Unless you buy very expensive things, you won't spent half the 1.5m.
Do you know where you are staying?
We spent a week at one of the 7 days Inns.. they were superb. Clean and very cheap (230 yuan per night) - no frills.
www.7daysinn.cn (except the website is in Chinese)...
Oh and we went to Outback in Beijing on Friday. There were 7 adults and 2 children, the bill came to 1,450 yuan... one main dish per person (mainly steak), plus drinks, plus 2 starters. At the current exchange rate, that came to 300,000 won.
Prices have definitely risen since the Olympics. |
