I read in the papers recently (a couple of times now) that dentists often perform many needless root canals, and also gold fillings, here in Korea. This is because they can earn substantially more money by doing so, due to the way the national health insurance reimbursement is set up.

Be wary if your dentist recommends either a root canal and/or a gold filling!

The National Health Insurance does not cover the cost of gold.

Me thinks there may be an inaccuracy in what you read.

You mean all the pain I went through -

http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=143113

and I don't need a root canal?

p.s. Gold fillings are better - the white and silver/grey fillings are cheaper -

however the silver/grey ones are poisonous

and the white fillings crumble after 4~5 years...

This is MUCH bigger problem in the United States.

Most business people in Korea are crooks. Doctors and dentists ALWAYS find something wrong with you, whether you are foreign or Korean. They are greedy moneygrubbers. That is why the last time I was in my home state, my dentist and hygenist got onto me, saying not to go 3 years without seeing a dentist again, because I had major plaque build-up. I told them I had been in Korea and was too scared of dentists here, because they lie and say you have cavities, etc when you really don't. I saw a dentist only once in Korea and of course, he lied and said I had a cavity. My dentist back in the states a few months later said I had no cavities. Just what I thought. The quacky Korean dentist just wanted to treat a perfectly fine tooth. I've never had a cavity and if a Korean says I do, I will never believe them. My coworker just went to a dentist in Yeouido for a cleaning and to have two of her cavities refilled, and the crazy dentist lied to her and said she had NINE cavities. She was quite worried and upset. I told her he was most likely lying. Even Koreans get told by dentists that they need to have this done and that done nearly every time they see a dentist. Mostly lies. One of my Korean friends actually had a dentist tell her that she had some baby teeth embedded under her gums that she didn't lose when she was a kid, and she needed to have a one million won surgery to get them out. Probably another lie. I highly doubt anyone has embedded baby teeth. I just love the lies they tell. Laughing

I have found the opposite to be true. I have had some work done at dentist here. However, the last four times I have been to a dentist, each time a different dentist, they have cleaned my teeth, checked them amd said everything was fine. No cavitities and no replacing fillings.

I don't disagree with what the OP says... but didn't the OP ask questions in a thread similar to this a few weeks back, only to have them answered with basically what he posted?

I'm confused. Maybe it was someone else?

Earlier in the year I went to a clinic and the dentist told me I had 8 cavities. I pretty much walked out there and then because that would mean I managed to develop 8 cavaties in less than a year. I've never had a cavity in my life by the way.

Back around Chuseok my wisdom tooth was playing up so I foolishly went back to the same clinic. Because it was the day before Chuseok he was trying to get out of there so somehow my teeth had regenerated and I had perfect teeth again.

The thing that is annoying is that I'm sure I do need at least one filling now. So when I was actually in need of work, he wouldn't do it because he wanted to go on holiday.

In my opinion, the poster implied that more than half - most - of them do this sort of thing. So, in this nation, we should try to be extra wary with dentists because it is not just some of them trying to perform unnecessary surgeries.

I had a wisdom tooth in a pretty rotten state. It had been filled and had the root treated in the UK over the years, but was still very sensitive and was giving some small background pain in my mouth, as there was a big cavity and decay under the big fillings.

The dentist asked if I was sure I wanted it removed on Christmas eve?
This because it was a blighter to get out and needed stitching up when finished. This meant 3 days of antibiotics and strong painkillers, which of course meant no alcohol over the holiday: This and the pain may have spoilt my holiday if I'd plans to drink, but I never so went ahead anyway.

Somebody impied something on the internet, so it must be true!!!!

Personally, I have had very good luck with healthcare here. Teeth removed, broken fingers, pnemonia, daughter born; all top notch care.

However, one should always check thier info and seek second opinions when dealing with healthcare (or any service, for that matter) in any country.

yup, those silver fillings are soooo dangerous.

Strange that the white ones are more expensive to put in than the amalgam ones.

I take it you also believe that auminium causes alzheimers as well.

I am NOT going to ever get a gold filling. It looks horrible.

Everywhere........right, like you have been everywhere. I appreciate the OP, he tries to say something that might help people, and then you act like somebody is trying to say something bad about your grandmother, so you attack him. What an insecure person you are, your posts really are about as useful as those broken sea shells near my hotel.
