Since yesterday, every ten seconds or so I get the message:-
Windows explorer has stopped working
Windows is checking for a solution to the problem...

then the window changes:-

Windows explorer is restarting...

The last time I used the laptop was 24/12 and it was fine. I turned it on yesterday and it downloaded and installed an update:-
Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.49.989.0)

It says the update was successful, however, since this update was downloaded the Windows Explorer message has been present.

I've looked at Problem Reports and Solutions and everytime Windows Explorer stops it places and error report. The error report reads:-

Problem signature
Problem Event Name: InPageCoFire
Error Status Code: c000009c
Faulting Media Type: 00000003
Damaged file name: shell32.dll
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 2057
Additional Information 1: 27dd
Additional Information 2: b76caa7c2627bab0b68e16f682ad848f
Additional Information 3: 38c9
Additional Information 4: 8f5bb9d7fe145d3ebf7b88bd6d68f7c1

Extra information about the problem
Bucket ID: 4558796

So far I've tried to system restore and remove the update but everytime I attempt this after the laptop has restarted it states that the restore has not worked.

I running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Compaq/HP Presario C500.

Any ideas how to solve this?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, do the following:

go to START, PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS, SYSTEM RESTORE

choose "restore my computer to an earlier time"

click next

choose a date before you updated the laptop. then click okay. Your data won't be lost, however, any programs you have installed after the date you choose to restore from will be removed and you will have to redo the programs or updates.

That is what I would do.

Does the sound of the start up music appear 'clean' or distorted? My pc started sounding distorted & garbled when I logged in & out. I had the same problem with "restore to an earlier time", & ended up getting the pc repaired in 'I' plaza, Seoul. Too many trojan infections, maybe? Try clearing out all cookies under "tools", "internet options". And install a good program for detecting / deleting trojans & bugs.

Sound is fine.

No trojans on the laptop. I have security in place and I clean the temp files, cookies and everything almost daily.

Any other ideas?

Your only chance for something out of the ordinary like this is to google the error name "inpagecofire".

Hopefully, someone out there got the same problem and found a solution.

On my HP when the system restore doesn't work I take the next step and use the function that allows me to restore it to the way it came from the factory (this is an option in system restore on my computer). I don't save any files on my computer so all I have to do is reload some software I have on there. Quick and easy. You may want to try this. Sometimes system restore just refuses to work for me.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=InPageCoFire+&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=

second link in the list, it will display the solution.

scroll to the very bottom of the page for the replies, you dont have to sign up for anything....the suggested solution is to uninstall MS Office.

else start googling more or the error codes you get.

id also look at shell32.dll, thats the error file there, either try a Repair install, not sure how it works with vista cos im on XP, and try to replace the shell32.dll file with the original on the disc, or find a fresh version online.

also look into this

http://www.instant-registry-fixes.org/how-to-fix-shell32dll-errors/

perhaps related to IE also.

I had the same problem last week and tried everything to remedy it. Unfortunately, I had to restore everything. It was difficult getting important files on a portable drive because my system would work for a few min and then begin to "not respond". I lost so much music it makes me want to cry. I hate Vista with a passion. Evil or Very Mad

I emailed Gateway and they told me to reinstall everything. My computer is "medialess" so I didn't need any CDs. Everything works fine for now. Rolling Eyes

Thank you all for your replies.

I've given up and gone back to my old laptop with good old XP! No real damage done, and I can still access the old laptop if I shut down explorer.exe .

Thanks again.
