Here are a few classes that I'm going to use for my summer camp. Most of it's stolen from other teachers, or websites, but I changed it a bit to fit a group of 10-20 students in a public school "camp"


Make your own English Board Game
Objectives:
Students make their own board game
Writing questions in English
Reading the questions written by other students
Giving answers to questions in English

Materials:
Lined paper (for brainstorming)
Large plain paper, or several pieces of paper taped together
Cardboard as a support/backing for the paper (optional
Tape to adhere the paper to the cardboard(optional)
Ruler (to make lines)
Markers/Pens/Crayons to design the game
Dice for game play
Game pieces/markers for game play



FIRST CLASS
1)Explanation/Introduction:
A.We will make our own �board games�
B.You will write the questions and challenges for the board game
C.There will be multiple board games, and we will practice playing all of them.
D.Give examples of a question and penalties
i.What is your favorite color?
ii.How many girls are there in your home-room class?
iii.Go back six spaces.
iv.Miss 1 turn.

2)Divide the students in to teams to brainstorm (4-6 students):
A.Write possible questions or challenges for the board game
B.Teacher helps correct spelling and grammar of questions
C.Choose which questions to use and which to discard.
D.Come up with negatives/penalties for landing on wrong squares

3)Design
A.Suggest a couple of possible designs (path ways, boxes)
B.Hand out the papers / markers / color pencils / rulers
C.Make the board games (write the questions ON the board game)


SECOND CLASS:
Have the students explain their rules and how to play their game
Divide in to new teams and play the game together, or in teams.

1)Introduction
A.When you were little, what was your favorite fairytale/story?
B.What kind of stories did your parents read to you?
C.Do you read a little kid a story about a bad person who wins? Why not?
D.What things do you think it�s important to teach kids?
E.These are stories we read to our children. While you watch it, think about WHY we would want our kids to hear these stories.


Instructions:
Give vocabulary and key words for each story
Give hand outs
Just *listen* and try to see if you can hear any parts of the story, or any words.
Don�t worry about every word, just listen to the overall meaning. Relax.
Try to fill in as many of the blanks as possible
Don�t worry about spelling or grammar, just write words


Discussion:
What is the story about? What words did you hear?
Read the story slowly again together (without sound)
What is the story trying to teach?
Why would parents want their kids to hear this story?
Listen again

Make Pottery
Objectives:
Make a �pot� using Paper Mache and Balloons
Following verbal directions
Vocabulary Expansion
Self-Expression


Materials:
Paper (to tear/cut in to strips)
Empty toilet paper rolls, tape rolls
Flour
Water
Balloons
Paints/Brushes (2nd class)
Soap (washing up after)


Vocabulary:
Pot, Pottery, Tear, Inflate, Paper, Paper Mache, Paste, Flour, Mix, Wrap, Dry, Harden, Neck, Rim, Design, Bumps, Smooth

Prior directions:
Wear clothes you don�t mind getting dirty/messy
The paste will wash out, but you should expect to get messy!!!

FIRST CLASS:
1)Vocabulary
A.Go over the different objects and their terms

2)Instructions/Demonstration
A.Inflate the balloon
B.Mix flour and water
C.Choose your neck/rim/top
D.Cut up or tear paper strips
E.Dip in the mix
F.Careful of lumps! They will dry and make a bumpy �pot�
G.Leave for 1 week to dry

SECOND CLASS
3)Instructions/Demonstration
A.Review sample designs
B.Paint your �pot�
C.Let it dry for at least 48 hours
D.Pop balloon, and take home your �pot�

GRAMMAR INTRODUCTION
1)Write vocabulary and phrases on the boardA.Demonstrate comparing numbers/scores
i.Ben�s score is 22, Tom�s score is 18. Ben�s sore is higher than Toms. Tom�s score is lower than Ben�s.
ii.Joe scored 15, Mike scored 18, Tom scored 18, Ben scored 22. Ben scored the highest. Joe scored the lowest. Mike scored the same as Tom.
2)Practice:
A.Write new numbers on the board, changing the order
i.Write the new sentences and answers together
B.Write new numbers on the board, changing the order
i.Go around the room, asking individual students to answer

GAME
1)Teach the kids how to play Black Jack
A.Vocabulary � Hit me (request another card), Deck, Cards, Dealer, Score, Black Jack (exactly 21 points), Ace, Bust (higher than 21 points)
B.Rules/Objectives
i.Each player is given 2 cards
ii.2-10 are their number value (5 of Aces is 5 points) Face cards are worth 12 (King/Queen/Jack) Ace can be worth 12 or 1, depending on the players preference
iii.Players can request more cards from the dealer in turn to increase their number
iv.The goal is to get exactly 21 points, without going over. More than 21 points is an automatic loss (22 points loses) Points are scored depending on how close to 21 you can get, without going over.

COMPARATIVES USING THE GAME
1)Play a round of Black Jack
2)After each round, ask the students to compare their score to another student or students.

A.Who scored higher than you? (Jack scored higher than me)
B.Who scored the highest? (Tom scored the highest)

3)DictionaryA.Look up the words you wrote down. Translate if necessary. Find several synonyms for the word you used (Interesting; arresting, captivating, pleasing, engrossing)

C.Each Letter � Find a word that describes you and make a �picture� sentence (Example)

Abracadabra! (Making sentences)

Materials:
1)Sentences written down on paper, and chopped to pieces
2)Two tables
3)A score board


Time: 20 minutes

How to play:

1)Take an easy text or sentence that will be somewhat familiar to the players.
2)Make two copies.
3)Cut the text into single words on paper
4)Put the papers with words on separate tables, far enough away that the opposing team can�t see their work
5)Divide the students in to teams
6)Students take turns to run from their seat, across the room, and try to arrange the words in to the proper sentence or sentences.
7)From the moment the student leaves their chair, they must continue saying �abracadabra� (or some other consistent sound) and can NOT take another breath. When they run out of air, they must stop, and go sit down.
8)When either team has arranged the words into a sentence/paragraph again, they must read it out loud.
9)Use several different sentences and play multiple times.

Time: 20 minutes

How to play:

1)Split the kids in to two teams
2)Players from each team get a chance to spell a word
3)If the player spells it correctly, they get a chance to kick or throw the ball towards the goal. If they score, then they get a point for their team.
4)Team with the highest points wins.


Use the vocabulary from the back of the text book
