...if you believe this piece of trash in the korea times:

http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/biz/2008/12/123_36936.html

my favorite part is this:

Quote:
Thirdly, with the government easing regulations, foreigners now have international ATM access and are able to remit over $10,000 out of the country. They can withdraw cash worth $50,000 equivalent in won at ATMs outside of the country. ``If any foreigner has an ATM card that was issued before this free-market type of move, they might need to get it changed,'' he said.

well despite looking thru my trash I can't find the paper work - but the check was for $45.00 (U.S.) and I wound up paying maybe 74,000 won?? I recall - give or take a few hundred won.

So after the conversion I think the fee was around 14,000 won or so - it used to be around 11,000?? maybe it's based on the amount of the check, I'm really not sure. I needed it so I just bit my tongue and paid.

if you need to buy one you also need to have the name of who it's being made out to and better bring your pp along just in case Rolling Eyes

If a bank stamps your passport, which is illegal under foreign laws not that Korea respects foreign laws, it means that the bank thinks that you are an illegal teacher. I guess banks thinks that we all are illegal. I have experienced so much racism at banks. I have only found one in Korea that treats me like an actual person.

So much for equality and certain human rights in Korea.

the stamping has been debated ad nauseum on this board - some banks do it; others don't.

I've never heard anyone say it's because they think you are illegal. I don't think that's true. This bank knows me and have seen my ARC, etc. The manager speaks E and is always helpful to me. Actually it's a pretty good branch.

I don't like or agree with the stamping but have resigned myself to the fact it's going to happen no matter what.

please share what you've heard that makes you believe what you wrote; it's a very interesting perspective.
