You didn't put one in there for "complete hell", which makes the poll inaccurate Razz

Considering the results of the "how's your year been?" poll, which were very positive, I'm surprised to see so much negativity in these early results Crying or Very sad

I voted 'more good than bad' and it definatly has been for me. Sometimes Korea can be difficult too, rarely wonderous though.

It's reasonable to say that going to another country is somewhat difficult, but also you can get more good than bad out of it so I voted the last 2 options the OP listed. Don't expect it easy where people behave real warm, friendly, and understanding like the Dutch, but expect it to be a rewarding experience if you take on the somewhat difficult challenges living and working in another culture presents.

Funny thing is when you open this can of worms, you end up understanding a great deal more about your home country, the world, and yourself.

Yes, it can be all those things and is from time to time and then some more of the good, the bad, and the ugly. Each one of us has a very different experience and different outlook on life, but often have similar goals and are met with very similar situations. It's like most places look very similar in Korea, but are all in fact different places. This presents very typical situations that determine the possibilities of what you'll experience as this is quite a homogeneous country and people. With that said, a lot of what determines how successful you are at a job and if you'll be liked rides a lot on your attitude and the efforts you make to do this gig. Some like it, some feel unpleasant in it, and many are bored to death after several months, but most can do it when they commit themselves to it.

Any country can be enjoyable and fun if you're open and interested. A lot of people who came here seem to have done absolutely no research on the culture or think that everything here should be exactly the way it is at home, which is stupid. My friends and I have a great time here, but I do know some miserable folks who sound like they were just as miserable back in their own countries.

If it's not obvious, the people on here who are miserable have at least 2 of the following problems:
-No friends
-Crappy job/boss
-Not getting laid

Without those problems, you can pretty much enjoy any major city in the world.

Head on.

I did months of research before coming here and prepared myself for the worst. And because most of it didn't come true, I couldn't be a happier camper.

The only thing SK needs to make it really wonderous would be gingerbread houses and candy buses. Oh and cleaner toliets.

I'm stacking money like I can't believe...

I live in Songpa gu, so I'm close to Seokchon Lake Park (2600m running track around Lotte World outdoor park), Seoul Norimadang (free traditional Korean performance, outdoor theater next to Seokchon Lake Park), Pungyu Hanmadang (free weekly performances), Jamsil-Hang river outdoor swimming pool, Sports Complex indoor Olympic swimming pool, Dong Seoul Bus terminal, 13,000 won taxi from Itaewon, 5 stops from Gangnam station... I study Korean for 1-2 hours every day in my free time (and I can practice anywhere I go)...

I must be lucky.

I've got the most asinine supervisor anyone has ever met. He's dumber than a box of rocks, insecure, lies like it's his job, and hates me.

I'm living my dream.
