Hello. I am the evil penguin, and the only things bright and sparkly that I know anything about are fishing lures and motorbike exhaust pipes.
Therefore, i am completely stumped when attempting to purchase a significant gift for a significant female.
In early to mid jan I will be catching the ferry from china to Korea to visit the girlfriend. Lately, despite the distance, we have been discussing our relationship and.... I'm... this is even hard to type... I'm actually thinking about going for the ring option. I'm just not sure if engagement is really the best thing to be doing in the present situation however. We just both have a few things to finish. So, backing out of the ring option... any suggestions on something meaningful? Something that says "i'm not scared of committment (jeezez who am i kidding.. I'm terrified!!!) and i want you in my life.. but i appreciate that we are both just not quite ready yet for somthing bright and shiny around your finger... maybe at the end of 2009 we will be".
Current thoughts include training a parrot to say exactly what i want the gift to say (ie "i'm not scared of committment (jeezez who am i kidding.. I'm terrified!!!) and i want you in my life.. but i appreciate that we are both just not quite ready yet for somthing bright and shiny around your finger... maybe at the end of 2009 we will be" or, failing that option, one of those necklace things that comes in two pieces. I wear a bit and she wears a bit. Or is that too corny? We're not highschool kids anymore.
anyway, any advice appreciated. Something that really is special and not just a typical present. Ladies, your input would be great. I really have no idea. Maybe i should just buy her a fishing lure AND a Ducati exhaust pipe. |

Does she need a new ipod?
I have a semi-longdistance-thing going right now, and it's kinda fun for us to send cheesy songs to each other during the inevitable absences.
Not the most romantic gift, but ipods are cool and the new nano comes in many interesting colors. |

interesting... I'll give it some further thought. I really am chasing something 'special' however..... something like a ring.... but just not ready for THAT yet.... but close. |

Two day whirlwind vacation in the city of her choice?
A casino junket to Macao, perhaps, where you bet on all her favourite numbers and birthdates and stuff, and win?
Snowboarding in Hokkaido?
Chinese New Year in Shanghai?
Dropping a grand on a chunk of gold or a pretty rock is all well and good, but nothing says 'me likee' like a really frivolous and expensive weekend, someplace new.
Kind of a useless suggestion if you don't want to drop a million won or more, though. |

A ryokan onsen experience in Japan is a nice getaway from two. Expensive now with the yen being so high
Chinese New Year in Shanghai would NOT be a fun gift. Busier than normal with transportation ground to a halt. Nothing open. |

I have been married for a year now. I was in the same boat as you and I did the expensive trip together. I was not ready yet for the whole married thing but was willing to show her I was almost there. I bought her the jewelry gifts to prove it but the expensive trip was the winner. I went all out with no limits. It worked, so I would say give that a try. |

So I'm guessing money and gifts are a major point of relationships in Korea too? That sucks (not that I'm planning to marry a Korean).
I definitely want to marry someone who has the same opinions about diamonds/jewelry that I do....they're friggin' rocks from the ground that are stored and their prices manipulated so idiots like us have to buy them for women because they're expensive and shiny.
Not that I intend on being broke my whole life, but I'd rather have a wife who cares less about rings and more about love. Ahh, the hopeless romantic. I'll probably die alone. |

Has anyone bought anything besides jewelry?
I'm just curious, not saying it's a bad gift but it's very cliche and it seems to be the only thing a guy can buy to commemorate special moments.
If that's the case you could always deck out for some jewelry that is unique yet classy.
I find saphire and ruby pretty nice, other than that, if it ain't diamonds it just comes off as tacky to me. Rubies and sapphires appear generally regal and can we worn for more casual occasions and of course look good to dinner events.
However, I just have a stubborn mentality that if it ain't diamonds, it's cheap... it's basically what Debeers has brainwashed every society to buying their blood diamonds. ESPECIALLY the women. So buying sapphires and rubys may still reflect cheap on you, despite the greater inhernent rarity, beauty and cost.
Well you could always buy her a diamond encrusted prada phone. She'll F-ing love you forever. No joke. I know a guy who bought her girl one. She will not break up with him, ever. Best gift in the world. She did everything and more for him that night. It's not because she's a princess either, but because it was really what she dreamed of having and never concieved of having. I think all girls want a diamond prada phone. The only issue is that it lasts for like 4 years... and then it's obsolete. Whereas jewelry she can wear until she's 80, or loses it. |

Spending that much on a diamond or real 18K gold phone from Vertu is dumb. Normal wear and tear and even the risk of theft would make it pointless. I cant see any girl getting more excited over a diamonds LG Prada phone than a Tiffanys bracelet or diamond solitaire. |
