|

Hello my wife (who is Korean) and I came back to Korea 6 months ago for a year. We will go back to Canada in August. We first went to Canada in 1998 after we were married. My wife has had permanent residency status since then.
Since we have been gone Canada has put into effect a new law stating that all permanent residents must have a Permanent resident id card. We left Canada before my was eligible to apply. (Apparently they were going province by province and we were not able to do it before we left)
So my question is how do we get this done from Korea? We have tried contacting the Canadian embassy but the Korean girl that works there is always rude. She won't answer our questions?
My wife does have her record of Landing which in my opinion should be enough to get her back into Canada. Then she can apply for it but we have been unable to find anyone to confirm this for us.
Any ideas or suggestions?? |

Well I looked into the matter a little more and found the forms she needs to fill out on the internet. It will still mean a trip to Seoul for her to get this thing processed. It will cost 50.00 and it is called a temporary travel document. What a pain in the ass. I can understand the reasons for making sure permanent residents are well accounted for and stuff but it is still a pain in the ass. Yesterday my parents called me up and were freaking out because they had heard on the news that some people were not being let back into the country. |

Den,
As a permanent resident, your wife cannot be out of the country for more than 6 months inside the same year without putting her residency status in jeapordy....
You should look into this mate. |

I worried about this too when I first read his inquiry. However, if you look at the current regulations, you must be present in Canada for a total of two years out of five.
Get the card ASAP. It has been a year since they started sending out the notices that people get apply for their cards. They are turning away people and sending them to get travel documents before entering. I think they had to put some teeth into their program after so many people just ignored their notices and never applied. |

We tried to apply in May when she got her notice but we were told it would take a long time to get it and we were leaving for Korea in July so they advised us to just get a travel document before we go home. Which is what we will do. As far as the six month rule is concerned everything I have read to date indicates that rule has changed. So I am not too worried about that. I was worried about how long it will take the Seoul embassy to process her application for a travel document but we have all her documents in order so we will do it ASAP and she should be good to go in August. |
