I found this remake, an exact clone of the original.

It's free and will run on PocketPC or PC.
That game rocked the house. I spent hundreds of hours on my old Amiga1200 alien hunting. Then I got the PC version and beat it in a weekend. Got lucky with the captures. |

| I used to love the game, but I really didn't like the economy part of the game. I would have a lot of fun hunting and killing aliens, but I'd always end up losing because the rest of the world would get pissed off at me if I ever expanded to a second or third base. After a number of times of losing from that, I finally realized the game wasn't going to work for me. It's no fun when the only part of the game I didn't care about is the part that kept ending it. |

You'd love some of the remakes out there. Some of them focus on the tactical combat and simplify the rest of it.
Why did they get pissed? Expanding is the only way to win without getting lucky. You lose funding if you don't adequately act in areas that are attacked. Put all your bases near the major funders, USA, Europe and Asia particularly.
You make most of your money by continuously selling off the stuff that you loot, find or manufacture. The funding is pitiful really. |

I'm actually playing the original itself right now. Found a torrent for it. I will probably get the Steam pack as well. $15 for the whole set of strategy goodness.
Only lost two men in the first mission. One was silly enough to drop a live grenade. BOOM.
Amazing how this game is still fun after all these years, while other games I loved just as much haven't aged nearly as well. |

I had that on my PocketPC a while back. It was a great way to pass some time.
A fun game, definitely a fun game. |

So I ground assaulted an alien battleship yesterday.
Bernard Chevialer is under enemy control.
BOOM
He was my rocket launcher guy.
Reload.
Next game I take it a bit more cautiously, and keep most of the squad in the skyranger. On the second round an alien drops either a grenade or a blaster bomb in it.
And so on.
Not quite ready to take on the big ships yet. |

Classic baby, classic! I'll have to give it a play or two for old times sake.
I'm playing Master of Orion 2 right now! |
