For short termers (under 3 years), I'd say definitely take sponsored housing (don't say 'free' because it's part of your compensation package). Even minimal savings on rent payments can add up to some serious coin in the bank or debt relief. Take it.

If you plan on staying longer, however, get your own housing, something that you like in an area you like. Having your own place on your own dime makes a world of difference here.

IF you are experienced in Korea, plan to stay for a few more years, have some basic level of Korean communication skills and understand how things work then it is a good idea.

If you are a newbie coming in fresh off the boat / plane it is the STUPIDIST thing you could possibly think of doing for more reasons than I have time to list here.

OP, if your question is sincere which I don't know, the poll options look a little slanty. Many of the people on Dave's who talk about having their own housing are putting down insanely huge deposits, like 10-40 million won. You really don't have to do that though.

There are in fact more than two options here. Company housing vs laying down a fat deposit. You could get a roommate, there are lots of rooms advertised in English on Craiglist with no deposit required. Or you can stay in a goshiwon. Or you can find a place that requires only a small deposit, 1-3 million won. Some jobs will give a housing allowance instead of an apartment.

Do agree with the old men with their huge housing deposits that I wouldn't do it fresh off the boat. Wink
