SINGAPORE, Dec 30 (Reuters) - Tiger Airways, a budget carrier 49-percent held by Singapore Airlines (SIAL.SI), said on Tuesday it has dropped plans to set up a low-cost airline in Korea due to the global economic slowdown.
Tiger had previously announced plans to form a joint venture airline with South Korea's Incheon Metropolitan City that would have operated out of the city's international airport.
"The recent global economic situation and continued regulatory uncertainty in Korea have meant that both parties have concluded that the climate is not conducive to the successful launch of a new airline at this time," the Singapore budget carrier said in a statement.
If Korean products are sooo good, and Korean companies are sooo good, and Korean businessman are sooo good, then why are they so terrified of a little competition? |

That is unrelated to the global economy. Everyone's afraid to go to Thailand and get stranded there. |

| Maybe they don't want their pilots jailed when a KoreanAir jet slams into a TigerAir jet that's parked--because the younger co-pilot didn't want to mention to his Lead Pilot the wing fell off to avoid some uncomfortable, vague, loss of face. |

There's no fear of getting stranded in Bangkok these days, things are back to normal for tourists.

Korea used to be a good place to live and work if you wanted to travel around Asia several times a year. With the state of the exchange rate and increased airfare prices, this is not the case anymore. It's damn expensive to get outside of Korea these days.
It's funny how every time there is an excuse for the Korean airline monopoly to raise airfares they do (high oil prices, the exchange rate, etc.), but when those issues are resolved, the prices never go back down. |
