I am going to one of these 2 places in March this year. I plan to travel with my wife and daughter, so emphasis on safety and no drugs/prostitutes/whoring ajosshis/drinking culture, etc.
Which one would be better in March? |

They both are fine as long as you stay away from parts of certain places. If you go to Thailand, you'll be fine as long as you stay away from a couple neighbourhoods in Bangkok, Pattaya and the main beach in Phuket. There are so many other islands and beaches where you see none of that at all. Even if you go to an island known for partying, like Ko Pha Ngan, you can easily find a quiet beach with a scenic beach-view bungalow. The rep that Thailand has really dilutes 99% of what the country has to offer.
I'd say the same holds true for the Philippines. Boracay is a good place to take the family over there, I reckon. I think it'll be the end of the rainy season in both countries. |

If you want a family vacation place in march then Alona Beach is a better choice than Boracay (if you are staying for more than a couple days).
Boracay is a nicer beach and better night life but you are stuck on the island (7km x 1km) with no real shopping or activities other than beach and bars.
Alona beach gives you the additional option of doing a tour of Bohol, shopping in Tagbilaran (either at the market or one of the 3 malls).
March is the beginning of the dry season so you should have fair weather for most of your trip.

I think both are fine, but it is MUCH easier to get away from drugs/prostitutes/whoring ajosshis/drinking on the islands of the Philippines than in Thailand.
Most of the island destinations in the Philippines are quite quiet places. I find in Thailand, I can't get away from the legions upon legions of foreigners...
Alona Beach is a good recommendation...plus Bohol is a great island for exploring.
I personally think Boracay is great for families as well. There are some bars where people kick back for a drink, and maybe a couple discos late at night, but most of the island is fairly day-oriented which is centered on a very gorgeous beach. Actually fairly ideal for a young kid. |

I have heard it's pretty cheap. I won't be taking too much, but of course taking enough, and a credit card for backup.
Bohol it is, I think. I showed my wife the photos and she starting hitting my arm, telling me she wants to go there.

If you do aim for Bohol, send me a note and we can do dinner. |

I love Bohol. It is a good choice. But I suggest that you don't go to Alona Beach. Alona Beach is a hole. It is crowded and dirty and just not enjoyable. I suggest that you stay at Bohol Tropics Resort in Tagbilaran and make day trips to Alona Beach if you must, http://www.boholtropics.com/. It is also much better for kids there. A safe environment, slides, swimming pools. Also, it can be quite romantic at night with live bands and a candlelit outdoor dining facility.
Or if you are intent on staying on the smaller island of Panglao, stay next to the public beach at Damaluan Beach Resort, http://dumaluanbeachresort.tripod.com/home.html. They also have a swimming pool there. It is far more quiet and peaceful than Alona Beach and again you can take a 10min. trike to Alona during the day.
Trust me I have been to Bohol several times. I know many people who have gone to Alona and regretted staying there. A nice place to visit but there are better options for accomodations. |

I have a house on the north end of the island (away from the tourists) so yes, I will be there in march. |

It's cheaper than Korea, but the won has bottomed out and made things more expensive.
In June of this year I bought pesos for 21 won at Incheon airport. Now, they cost over 30 won!! |

We found roundtrip tickets, 2 adults and 1 baby for 1.18 including all taxes. I think that's pretty good, we booked them.
Thanks all for your help. We're doing a Bohol/Cebu trip.

Since you have broadband... take a look at a few of these.
It CAN be a very affordable family vacation and does have something for everyone.
The won/peso rate sucks but the won dollar rate has actually improved from p40=$1 to p46=$1.
don't bring won. Buy dollars at the airport and change them here. You might want to buy p5000 in small bills for your first day here until you can get to a money changer off the beach.
