Stores beef up meat promos

http://joongangdaily.joins.com/article/view.asp?aid=2899285

As the year of the ox approaches, local retailers are setting up beef promotions, offering hanwoo, Korean beef, and imported beef at a fraction of their original cost.

Shinsegae-owned discount store E-Mart said it will sponsor a hanwoo sale from today to Jan. 7 with the Hanwoo Association.

Around 1,000 head of Korean cattle will be sold at 30 percent less than the original price. Premium hanwoo sirloin will go for 5,500 won ($4.3Cool per 100 grams. Also from today to Jan. 14, customers can win either one head of cattle, Shinsegae gift certificates or a one-years supply of hanwoo through a lucky draw.

This event was organized to help hanwoo farmers who had a difficult year following the resumption of U.S. beef imports, rising feed costs and sinking cattle prices, said a spokesman for E-Mart.

Homeplus will hold a hanwoo festival until Jan. 31 along with the Hanwoo Association, and Lotte Mart is holding its beef discount event through Jan. 7. The discounter will sell 450 tons of imported and hanwoo beef up to 56 percent cheaper than normal. LA galbi, tender short ribs, will go for 50 percent less at 990 won per 100 grams. In welcoming the year of the ox, the discount is for customers who cant usually afford expensive cuts, said Jung Sun-yong, head of Lotte Marts meat department.

I've come to suspect the anti-beef protests were not, as claimed, backed by North Korea and leftists to give the new president a hard time. In fact, the protests were backed by a cabal of kalbi restaurant owners to secure a source of cheap rib meat.

Wow, so beef prices should be going down now that supply is significantly increasing. I was in Emart last Friday, but didn't notice any thing being cheaper than before.

I want to see pork ribs go down in price. Those are just the bomb.
