Voted "all right", but 2008 was actually closer to a "GREAT" year -- best of the past five. Still, always room to grow and improve.

Right. The global economy can do whatever it pleases -- go up, down, backwards or sideways, and I really don't give a monkey's. For my team of pickpockets and panhandlers, it's when our business slows down, when we don't have enough work -- THAT'S a recession. That's our "global financial crisis", so to speak. And in over 12 years, we've never been in sync with the global or even the domestic economy's highs, lows or woes.

So whatever fortuitous planetary alignment, moon phase or weather pattern conspired to produce such a memorably profitable 2008 for me and the people who count on me, I pray they continue to hold sway in 2009.

More of the same, please.

I haven't had a bad year since... Well, never. 2008 was another good one in the string.

Happy New Year and all, but I may need to approach financial dynamos like "JongnoGuru" for a job.

I just found out that my privately owned high school in Gyeonggi-do probably won't get the government money they need to rehire me again (I've been there four years) because they changed their name and status as a technical school to compete with the regular public high.

New government guidelines for public school hiring - through EPIC and other programs - are that no "new teacher" over 55 should be hired. Since I'm 59 and prefer public schools to private, this may be the beginning of the last New Year for me in Korea...

2008 was a rough year for me so I'm glad it's over. However, I'm feeling very optimistic for 2009.

The undoubted highlight of 2008 was building a new house. We moved in in the spring and it's everything we hoped for--no complaints there. The problem was that we used up every last penny (and then some!) on the house and its furnishings, and I spent the rest of the year working feverishly to get back on top of the financial situation.

There has been light at the end of the tunnel since about October and, although there are still a few calculations to do, I think my December payments from various clients were just enough to thrust our heads back above water. I look forward to putting an end to the financial madness in 2009, and perhaps reacquainting myself with my hobbies.

Happy New Year everyone. I have a feeling 2009 will be a good year for the Lemmings household, and I hope it is for you, too.

Good, solid year for me personally.

1. Left Korea for good.
2. Got out before the won took a nosedive.
3. Landed a better university position with administrators who are actually professional.
4. Visited San Francisco for a week with my wife.
5. Visited India for ten days, again with my wife.

Downside:

1. Never got to see let alone date Lee Hyori.
2. Still stuck in Asia (although the "view" on the sidewalk is still good)
3. Missed the fall colors back home again.
4. Missed the White Christmas back home again.
5. Missed my mom's Swedish meatballs with galuska yet again.
