my friends in the U.S. have signed on to Skype - they have a webcam on their pc but couldn't get the video to work - I could see them but they couldn't see me.

we checked all their preferences and they had it set right in the Skype menu but I think maybe they needed to enable the webcam on the computer

they are using Vista - I'm on a Mac

any suggestions??

I'd suggest you use something more reliable. Skype is good but it isn't too intuitive and you need to set it up properly so it will be reliable.

I've had great success and highly recommend using www.tokbox.com Great streaming and few whistles and hurdles along the way.... Just both sign up and go. I've spent a lot of time researching these things.

I'd recommend something else if eteaching however. On our community we have a nice flash server with whiteboard and a completely foolproof solution to learning - veraconference.

As for your problem, could be all sorts of things and this would be hard to sort out without being there. Yes, check the settings and that his computer is accepting the cam. That's primary.

cheers,

DD

thanks but no thanks - I've used skype for years w/o problems - I've just never had to explain it to someone on the other end about the video - they are new at this.

If their webcam is chosen as the default device in Skype-Tools-Options-Video Settings.......then it should work.

If it still doesn't, then maybe they didn't install the drivers for the webcam.

god you are aggressive the link he provided is fine

In answer to your question make sure you are in his contact list (and his in your) as the default setting is to only accept video from people in your contact list. If he/you dials your/his number each time it won't work.

Check that you are both using the same version.

check the basics, does he have it plugged in? (stupid i know) does it work with other software?
send him this link

There are also some problems reported between vista and skype ... Both in people not being able to hear each other and in the video issue.. I had used skype with no problems on my old computer (with XP) but have not yet been able to get it to work properly on my new Vista computer ... Even though the microphone is configured properly and works with any other program as soon as I open skype it mutes the microphone within Skype so that I can hear the other person but they can not hear me ... I have updated drivers and everything else but haven't managed to fix it yet ... Looking on the skype site earlier today I saw people who had reported similar problems to what you are saying in one person being unable to see the other on video (with vista) ... I didn't look into what the suggested fixes were for this ... But it is not an isolated problem...

Moosehead - the link works fine. What you see isn't being downloaded onto your computer (other than the temporary cache), it is just the flash setting up. Trust me, it works fine.

If others are interested, you can go to This site

and chat all you want. On my dime. Don't have to register etc and can use it even with students (probably best with uni. students). Even record your session.

Another option is the new gmail video chat. I used it once and it worked great. I had no problems and seemed quite simple. http://mail.google.com/videochat

Cheers,

DD

It's called flash. Most websites use it now. It's okay.

DD was just trying to help. And I think he did.

there was NO indication this was a flash program - and it may be because I'm on a Mac - but doesn't really matter - it was a flaky website.

if someone really wants to help they don't start disparaging the product someone is using and going on about how faulty it is and how something else is so much better - when in fact - the program was NEVER the issue at hand - but a hardware question.

that's essentially the same as telling someone they've made a poor judgment and here, this one is better because I told you it is. WTF??? Skype is well respected and widely recognized across the world as a leader in VOI technology. I'd never heard of that other program and it was curiousity more than anything that I even tried the link in the first place.

*TIP* helping someone is responding to what they asked for - NOT responding to what you think they need.

as I suspected, they did not have the video enabled yet. that was it all along. I just wanted to make sure.

Moosehead you arse.......a lot of websites these days are flash-based and need a few seconds to start up.......you're not downloading anything until the download pop-up happens.

That site is safe as.......but I still think Skype should work....Vista, XP, whatever. I run video Skype on Vista x64 without a hitch.
