I will be coming over in February and was wondering what the dress code is for working in the school? |

Dress as seriously as you want to be taken. |

Wear a suit your first day and for special events, and cotton pants and something with a collar other days.
Basically it doesn't matter, though, as the way you dress will never affect your job security if you are a nice person.
It definitely won't affect promotion, because you'll never get promoted. You'll get raises as you move up in level, but that's it. Being an awesome teacher and wearing a suit everyday will get you nothing in Korea in a public school. |

Why are you talking about a suit and pants? I'll never wear a suit.
Wear shorts and whatever. Be comfortable. |

Shorts? No way. Khakis, slacks, jeans, any kind of long pants, but unless you're a PE instructor, shorts won't fly. |

My principal said something to my handler when I put my jeans up into capri style when I had an insect bite. Shorts and showing hairy legs isnt cool for guys in Korea. |

Male jealousy aside, if they had some kind of policy, wouldn't it be in the contract? |

ha haha
that is so funny, but so sadly true...
like someone else said, dress as serious as you want to be taken. if you wear holy jeans, are unshaven and unkept hair, expect to be treated like a beggar that is lucky to have a job.
if you wear shorts and t-shorts, you will be treated like a high school grad that is in a job you are not qualified for.
wear a collared shirt, and you will be treated like someone who cares about a job that is the right level of your credidentials.
wear a suit, and you will be treated like a phD gracing them with your presence.
sadly, this is about 90% true. |

first, it does, indirectly,
"article 15"
section 4-employee shall not damage or tarnish the reputation of the teaching profession. employee shall comply with and observe any codes of conduct acceptable for Korean teachers.
secondly, does it really have to say anything about a dress code? in america do teachers have to have it in their contract to not dress like a bum? do doctors refuse to wear gloves because it isnt in their contract? do lawyers refuse to wear suits because it isnt in their contract? do mcdonalds workers refuse to wear a uniform because it isnt in their contract?
no, its just part of the job. |

I'd like to know how many native teachers in Korea you think are treated professionally or even acceptably... sadly, about 90% of the teachers here are treated poorly. Guess they just didn't dress well enough for you |

i knew someone was gonna say this, and i know some korean ass clowns will always treat us poorly, but i have seen a direct relation between our clothes and the treatment we receive from the non ass clowns |

I dress business casual. I used to wear a shirt and tie, but that just gets old. Now I wear a suit on special days only. Basically I dress the way most teachers my age dress at my school. |

Are polo shirts (with collars of course) OK? Where is your job, and do you think business casual holds for all (or almost all) English-teaching jobs?
P.S. I actually HAVE a Ph.D. but don't want to wear a suit just to put on airs. |
