I'm in the process of finding an insurance policy back home in the US to cover me for emergencies if I get hit by a bus or something and sent back home.

I kept a private policy from home my first year in Korea, but when I called providers to explain my situation and switch to a cheaper plan, I was told that it's illegal for me to have two insurance plans and that I was expected to use my US insurance while in Korea.

I can't even imagine how impractical that would be. I want to keep some sort of basic coverage in case I have a major emergency and lose my employment and insurance in Korea.

Any suggestions?

You should buy travelers insurance before you come.

Get the national healthcare while here. By law, the school should pay half of your national healthcare in Korea.

A.I.G, Meritz, Dongbu, ING all have policies they will issue to foreigners if you are interested, which cover major medical and anything else you might be interested in. I have three policies which combined only cost me around $150 US dollars, with a premium payback provision written into them if you don't have any major events during the life of the policy. If you want some information on how to hook up with them, send me a PM and I'll be happy to share what information I have about them. The reps only speak Korean so you will have to have some knowledge of Korean or have someone who speaks Korean help you when you apply. Hope this helps.

What I'm most worried about is having insurance when I come back to the US should something happen in Korea and I had to go home for longterm care or surgery.
