I got a new schedule today (48 hours in advance!)... but, here's the deal. I figure the weekly hours one way and it's 37 thereby qualifying me for 7 hours of overtime a week. But I figure them another way and it's 23 hours a week. Of course, my boss also then asked me to eat pizza with her and her daughters... she didn't like me at first cause I was a guy teacher, but after the first month, she's been really nice to me. Should I stand pat, should I make a stink?

Opinions?

Please explain how there can be 14 hours difference. Smile

What does your contract say? Does it say one class=1 hour, or one hour=60 minutes?

It doesn't specify the length of a class hour... gotta love vagueness. So, since each of my classes is 50 minutes, I'm technically teaching for 23 hours a week... but with 10 minute breaks and about 30 minutes both before and after school, I'm on the premises doing school related activities for 37 hours.

I feel like I should understand this stuff, but it just doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense.

30 minutes before and after school would not count anywhere you teach. the 50 minute class rule is custom not law. your contract does not stipulate that each hour counts as 50 minutes, so NO you are not teaching overtime.

Nope.........sorry dear, but if your contract doesn't specify, then class minutes.....is not counted for an hour.....and like the person above said the prep and break is not paid or included either.......... Welcome to the world of the first year contract!

The 30 before and after you get squat. However try to get each 50 minute class concidered an hour. Act like thats what it is. Say to your boss, so I'l be at 33 hours this month? See how she responds and explain why you think it is. You might get it.

Yeah, that's probably not a bad idea... I guess I feel like I'm not really needing to do anything unless I end up being on the school premises doing work for more than 40 hours a week (since 40 is the standard work week in America) ... I'm feeling that's kind of the cutoff between just sittin' back and doing my work versus starting to make this an issue at work and potentially headin' on home if things don't get resolved...

I've just heard that alot of hagwans will start you low hours then increase and increase until you're boned... so I gotta set a personal limit I guess.

I worked at many hogwons and here is what I learned as per hours:
50 minute classes= 1 hour of teaching
40 minute classes= 40 minutes of teaching

As for having to be there 1 hour before your first class, prep, etc. Those did not count as hours worked. So, the way I see it is that your boss only counts your time in class as hours taught, and that since your classes are 50 minutes they count as 1 teaching hour.
1 class= 1 hour
2 classes= 2 hours
and so on.

I'd say no to OT.

You are also getting paid to prepare. SO say it takes you 3mins to get back to the office after your 50mins is up, then 5mins to prepare for the next class (get books/handouts etc ready) then go to the next class, you will find those 10mins are gone pretty fast.
