|
|
I recently got myself a new system with a Geforce 9800 inclusive, and I've learned that dithering(?) is no longer supported by these newer cards. I have been trying to play some old games of mine (5-10 years) and while I can get them to run fine, the textures look absolutely terrible. The picture is very sharp and smooth, but the textures are terribly blocky and patchy. It seems strange I can get an older game working fine, but it looks worse than a system with onboard graphics. Anyone have experience with this? It's hard to say what games do and don't work, it depends on the way each game is made. |

Have you tried running the older games in DX8 or even DX7 mode? |

How does one even do that? I remember downgrading DX a few years ago and it was a real bitch back then, I can only imagine the hassle I'd get for removing DX10 from Vista. |

I've been having a problem too. My 8800 series card is not working well with my old'ish game, Battlefield 2142. I'm getting some weird graphical problems which are making the game unplayable. |

Removing some functions so that they can re-introduce them later under a new name -- and at a higher price. |

After some research, it appears 16-bit dithering is no longer supported by the latest Nvidia cards. I've seen posts all other the net about this, and some people indeed are unhappy. One can hope they'll reconsider the decision later. The games always worked FINE even with all this latest tech. Sheesh. |

It's such a cheap filter they should be able to reinstate it with a driver update. Hope they do, it's often fun to do some memory lane gaming. |

Hmm. Have you tried emulation or software mode? Some old games should give you some options to turn off the troublesome features. No such worries with the old game I'm playing now, but then any old PC can handle 320*200 VGA. On the other hand I'm getting the odd crash due to the combination of mods I'm running. (XCOM) |
