Native English speakers who want to teach the language in Korea will face tougher regulations for a work visa....
The law requires those wishing to obtain the E-2 visa to submit a police certificate of their personal criminal history issued in the country of citizenship or residence and stamped by the Korean embassy. The new version also requires the applicants to hand in a health certificate to show the person has no infectious or sexually transmitted diseases, and a transcript from the last educational institution attended in a sealed envelope.
The new rules come in response to public perception that some foreign English teachers are little more than cowboys....
The revision will go into effect from the end of March after approval by the Cabinet. |

Umm... aren't these the same regulations that are in place currently?
WTF is this stamp from the Korean Embassy? I'm in Korea and probably will stay for a third year. Does that mean I have to go all the way back to Migook to get a dumb stamp in Chicago?

That was written last year... I think the part he was emphasizing was the "cowboy" part.
And... When I came to work the first thing my principal asked me was "You can ride horse? You are Cowgirl?" And was thrilled when I said I could.
I was so tempted to tell him "All you gotta do it spread your legs and hold on!" |

It says the E-2 visa is now valid for 2 years and requires a clean criminal record. This means a sparkling clean record with no blemishes. What is a health certificate? Aren't blood and urine tests already performed on said cowboys? Korea is battening down the hatches once again.
Yeeee! Haaaa! How many cowboys want to live in Asia? 0 cuz they love to be in American rural country. I thought that was so comical to put in the press that the public perception is English teachers are little more than cowboys. Cowboys where I come from would NOT step foot on a big shiny jet and definitely would NOT step foot on some strange land over yonder. And they definitely wouldn't wear that sick pukey cowboy style common in Itaewon shops. How funny. LMAO!
Could you imagine a cowboy visiting Korea singing in a bar, "all my exs live in texas," and then he says,"Yee, haa! when I return back to cowboy country, boyz I will be singing, "all my exs live in Korea," cuz they some mighty fine looker hunneees here." |

| Wouldn't you have to sign a 2-year contract in order to be issued a 2-year visa? That just doesn't make sense. Standard procedure in Japan used to be to issue 3-year work visas owned by the employee. It would be nice to see Korea go that direction. |

It'll never happen. If you did 2 years in the Korean Army then I think they might give you the same freedoms a Korean has. |

You know how Hagwons are a giant cartel? If E2 holders were allowed to quit and work where they please, you better believe the hagwons would change their contracts with some stipulation that would make people think twice about leaving the job. |
