I seen a poster today in Gangnueng advertising a rainbow trout festival in Pyeongchang going from January 2nd to February 2nd. It said it was just across from the Jinbu bus terminal. Yes, there are American style rainbow trout in Gangwon. I buy live ones at a raw fish restaurant for 10,000 won each and take them home to bake.
I too would love to do some ice fishing, but don't see how to find it, but I know it's out there. You just got to have a set of wheels and be pretty good at Korean to navigate your way to what you want to do. There are so few Koreans who know any English in the rural province.
There are also American largemouth bass in Korea imported 30 or 40 years ago that seem to adapt and take well to the colder climate with longer Winters, short Summers, and more pollution than is typical in their native North American habitat. Don't expect 10 pounders. There's no fishing laws so don't worry about licenses or limits. There's a river near my place, but the fish are so few though a few small 1 to 3 inch sizers of several species are in there. Somethings badly wrong, because there are hardly no fish and the Korean anglers bag every tiny fingerling they catch. Gotta find a good lake or resevoir. I know there's one in Andong which is the most popular bass fishing lake, but you gotta have wheels or someone to take you.
There's a guy in Changwon, James Card, who takes people up into Gangwon for trout fishing and he's a well experienced guide who has trekked and studied the natural side of Korea for many years. He probably knows more about Korean nature and navigating rural Korea than any other non-Korean in the world. |
