Isn't there an Uncle Tom's Cabin in Apgujeong as well?

Yup, my old gf used to go there a lot but had no idea what an Uncle Tom was.

Seeing as how the book title pre-dates the colloquialism, this isn't even remotely close to the Hitler bar.

As do Europeans - they still call blacks the n-word, throw bananas at their own soccer players, make monkey noises during soccer matches. What about the swastika that showed up in Rome after Italy won the World Cup? What about the conservative French government quoted as saying their team lost because they had too many blacks? It happens quite a bit in countries comprised of a single race - i.e. many European countries as well as Asian countries.

Also, I think Korea's strong nationalism has to do with small country complex.

Directions to this bar?

And Uncle Tom's?

And the Nazi themed bars?

I'm thinking about doing some writing on the subject.

to whoever thinks the bar owners are racists for naming their bar strange fruit: you're an idiot. Strange Fruit is a song by billie holiday that protests against lynching. Yes, in general Koreans are racist but that doesn't mean the bar owners are. They're probably just Billie Holiday fans.

To the person who pmed me about it: it's still in the same location, near stereo, on the northern side of hongdae. Maybe the owners just took a vacation or something? The place doesn't seem to be hell-bent on making a profit.

My guess is that the bar owners knew what they were doing when they picked the name Strange Fruit. Koreans are unapologetic racists.

You are a retard. If you are by chance white, you should be the first one to stfu.

Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop

That song just doesn't put me in a drinking mood. I don't want to consume anything liquid after thinking about the blood of Black men dripping from trees. I don't know why anyone would name a bar after such a sad, dark song.

GUYS THIS IS WHY WE DON'T POST ABOUT REALLY GOOD BARS ON DAVE'S ESL CAFE.

Seriously, keep good bars a secret.

and I knew one person in particularly who REALLY liked Strange Fruit..but there are a ton of interesting bars all over HongDae and all over that street that are good. I never understood his particular interest to that particular bar.

That's a good street though and occassionally you see foreigners but not many. There are literally tons of streets all over HongDae, and I've always been amazed how most bars have no foriegners in them, despite the fact the general area is so popular with foreigners.

Generally the foreigners who go to HongDae remind me of Koreans on the subway. Sometimes you have an option of two different stairwells and they both go to the platforms. However 99% of the Koreans fight and jostle each other going down the same stairwell, then I'll casually and relaxingly flow down the empty stairwall. Well, the foreigners basically do the same thing with HongDae.

It is also interesting that mention of 'Strange Fruit', 1 of literally 1000s of bars in HongDae...will suddenly create an ant stream bypassing the other 990 bars that foreigners don't go to, to try to find this one, just because of this post.

Hi, I am putting a show on at this bar on Sunday and though I know how to get there, I don't know how to give directions/landmarks to get there. Could anyone possible help me out in this regard?
