In other news, the sun has been discovered to radiate heat and light.

It's not really a big surprise, but it is very sad IMO. I feel horrible whenever I see some students sleeping in class. I know it's not their fault for the lack of sleep because they are part of a go-go non-stop society that drinks more red-bull and energy drinks than anyone else on earth.

When Kids forget to be Kids, it's a sad day for all of us. Crying or Very sad

I slept in class all the time when I was a kid, and it had nothing to do with not getting enough sleep.

We weren't allowed to sleep in school except in kindergarten we took short naps. Korean kids are really stressed and exhausted, especially in the larger cities where they're just shuttled around from hagwon to hagwon after a whole day at public school. While they're studying a variety of subjects, many are severely lacking rest, nutrition, socialization, and recreation. I found the wealthier looking well dressed kids in the city were always stressed, whining, hungry, and exhausted much more than the average country kids in blue jeans. Country kids are a charm compared to city, because they get more free time, more rest, more food, more exercise, and more play time. Wealthy high achieving Koreans in the cities intend to do good, but they're screwing up big time by expecting too much from their kids and using hagwons as educational baby sitters while parents work and stay out late at soju hofs with their bosses.

Remember the Korean adage - 3 hours if you want to go to Seoul National, 4 for Korea Uni and 5 for Yonsei. Something along those lines for the SKY.

This whole one-upsmanship regarding lack of sleep on the part of Koreans is idiotic. OK, we get it, you're dedicated. Rolling Eyes Now grow up.

ive got a 12 year old who swears he goes to bed at 12am and gets up at 4am. Strangely he never looks tired in my class, around 5pm.

I've got one kid who always asks me about life in England. She once asked if there are hagwons in America and England. I said, not really, it's more of a korean thing. She then remarked that even though Koreans study like crazy, they are still not as strong a country as those in North America and Europe.

Very very true, although I think what this article describes is more like post-childhood.

it may be untrue about the Red Bull - don't know, don't drink it -

BUT - I've had second graders (elem school) tell me their parents give them coffee - I have no doubt - how else to get them to stay awake ??

there was a thread on here some time ago about kids being out late at night - I'm often stunned to see parents trucking their children around on trains and buses at all hours on a weeknight.

further - many hakwons - both E and non-E - stay open on national holidays and Saturdays - many children don't even get as many days off as their teachers!!

ask any of your students what their "job" at home is - they'll tell you - "be a good student and do my homework is my job" -

borderline child abuse IMO Shocked
