|
|
I've probably asked this in the past but I can't remember exactly. I'm thinking about purchasing something on eBay (shipping from Japan). The item will cost $500 and have $140 in shipping charges. The shipping charges seem a bit much to me, but it's a sort of large musical instrument.
So, what should I expect the Korean government to bleed me for? The same item sells on various Korean auction sites for 6x that price so I'm a bit leery.
Also, is it right that they include shipping fees in calculation of customs charges? I could've sworn in the past that they did.
I hope this makes sense. I haven't had my coffee yet. |

I think it probably depends on who processes your mail. I`ve never been charged before but then I never ordered something for 500 bucks and beyond. $140 sounds about right if it`s an oversized package and using airmail. It`s all about the weight and each gram puts it into a different category. |

You can always have it sent home then mailed back to you if it's not too heavy.
I've had online packages shipped here from sellers online and no extra feee.....
I heard you should ask them to put "Used gift on the package"....you can also ask them to forgo the receipt or not include. I recently sold some DJ equipment to a guy in Uraguay.....the laundry list of things he asked me to do for shipping was like mailing drugs to get around customs... |

haha, yeah... I bought some stuff from a music store in the US... thankfully the owner had lived abroad and was sympathetic.
I'll give it a try with this seller too. |

Yes, they do this. Your customs charge may be in the $100 range. |

But Japan`s closer than the US? Why double pay Japan post and then USPS? Ship it directly but get it undervalued if the person is willing. |

I just checked with him and he is willing to undervalue it. So, now I just have to win the auction. |

Yes, they include shipping charges in their duty tax calculation. With a musical instrument, they'll charge you 15% IIRC (I don't have the customs booklet in front of me). |

This is sort of off-topic, but I remember friends who lived in a third-world country telling me about how they always told people who shipped them things to write the value as being some ridiculously low amount so that the customs officers wouldn't 1. charge them the actual price of the item or 2. keep it for themselves.
I know Korea isn't a third-world country, but the mentality I'm accustomed to is to basically say anything shipped through the mail is worthless. |

Well if you write it too low and they open it up and see...a brand spanking new laptop. The jig is up. The key is to underwrite it to a tolerable/reasonable amount of the true cost of the item. |

problem with japan post is, that its not the international post which is expensive its the domestic post..
so if your package needs to get to osaka or tokyo to get on the plane..
thats were you will be paying the money for the delivery..
so 140 bucks seems about right if the package is not in tokyo or osaka..
you want pay tax on the item if the item is second hand..
so make sure the seller says used goods on the box.. |

You're somewhat right; I was exaggerating for effect; one should try to write a nominal and not-too-unbelievable value. Of course, if the third-world customs officials open the package and find what looks like a new laptop, they'll just keep it anyway; they won't care whether or not you misrepresented its value. You don't want them to open the package in the first place.
It's difficult, because what some people would consider a cheap price, they would consider very expensive, so if even if you write something that seems low to you, they'll think, "Wow, a $50 item inside! Let's keep it!" |

You could do that, but then you could never insure the item you're shipping. Well, you could, but only for the amount you are claiming it's worth. eg I would never ship a laptop and say it was worth $100. If it decides to go "missing" all I could claim was $100; so much for the new laptop and the couple grand I just lost. |
