Two Korean tourists have been described as "plain stupid" by Northern Territory police after they became stranded on a dirt road that was closed because of flooding.

The tourists were travelling from Queensland to Darwin when they became bogged in the outback.

The main road artery leading into the Northern Territory has been closed since Saturday, when 100 metres of the road collapsed during heavy rain.

Despite road closure signs and barriers on the Barkly Highway west of Avon Downs, the pair decided to drive their Nissan van onto Rankin Road.

The dirt road runs from the Barkly Highway to the Tablelands Highway.

"The actions of these two were irresponsible and they placed themselves and rescuers at risk," Superintendent Bruce Porter said in a statement.

"These signs are put there for a reason, and for the public's safety."

Police rescued the pair on Thursday morning after their car became bogged about 50km from Avon Downs.

Supt Porter said the pair had been issued with a $90 traffic infringement notice for ignoring traffic control signs.

"I again reiterate to the public the importance of taking these warnings and closures seriously," Supt Porter said.

"There is no easy alternative to this level of flooding, and to assume that a dirt road would be any more passable than a bitumen road is just plain stupid.

"Common sense must prevail."

Supt Porter said the tourists had been escorted back to Camooweal, near the Queensland border.

Two men from Mt Isa were also fined after police found them on the Barkly Highway near the Rankin Road turnoff.

The pair alerted police to the stranded Koreans.

They told the officers they had travelled from Mt Isa to see the flooding for themselves as they did not believe the media reports.

The Barkly Highway is expected to remain closed for at least three weeks

Yeah, it's just a huge coincidence that they ignored a sign and that they're Korean.

If only they'd remembered to throw a few jars of kimchi under the tires, they never would have had this problem.

Is there any necessary connection between ignoring taffic signs and being Korean?

Didnt the article mention they were not the only people who got fined?

Were the two from Mt Isa smarter than the Koreans ?

Rac***, huh?

Tornado chasers may be crazy, but they use equipment to study the natural disaster. What does that have to do with ignoring a road sign and getting trapped in flood waters, mind you?

I too once ignored sings not in English and it cost me a lot of money. Like the Koreans in an English speaking country not knowing what the signs meant, I too though I could just park my car anywhere, because I didn't understand the signs so I got busted with a huge fine. They took my car hostage to drive home the point.

A friend worked as a guide in australia. He said the worst were the Japanese tourists. They don't understand that, unlike Japan, things that may put one in danger, offend, or present one with a foul odor is not roped off and warned about with a series of frantic comic bears wearing construction worker helmets and frantic looks on their faces.

They'd just go wandering off, assuming if they're allowed to wander that way there will be water and cell phone connections at a minimum.

Of course they might not have anything on the Korean missionaries that got bullets in their head a couple years ago.
