Would you eat Eggs that have been refrigerated for 2 weeks but have an expiration date of January 10th?

Just curious. I bought 3 dozen and haven't eaten the last dozen. Are they still good or should I trash them?

I was going to answer no until I read your post.

Eggs I would give about an extra week. Past that toss 'em.

If they look alright and smell alright then simply make sure you cook them at high temperature.

Then all is fine.

Give them a test. Get a bowl or pot and fill it with cold water. If the egg sinks, it's good. If it floats half way, then it's your call. If it floats, throw them away. Bacteria causes gas to build inside the egg causing them to float.

Eggs that are refrigerated are good for at least a week past the date on the box, sometimes more - call it a 'best before' date rather than an expiration.

American Food Scientist Alton Brown says that eggs can be kept safely in the refrigerator for four weeks, providing you're buying Grade A eggs and they're fresh when you buy them.

I bought a dozen eggs this past summer from the 5-Day market, cracked one for breakfast and a bloody, 3/4 developed chick plopped onto my frying pan. Have not eaten an egg since.

That's considered a delicacy in some countries. You just threw away some gourmet food, my friend. Laughing

What's your problem? I might take you for an asshole soon, which was not my first opinion of you (based on your posts).

I just read some of your old posts. Maybe you are an asshole after all. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Did eggs go bad before they started putting expiration dates on the packages? Laughing

They're good.

If you refrigerated them they're food until Feb10th at least.

Eggs are naturally hermetically sealed and stay good for quite a long time. All the 'tests' we have such as dunking them in water to see if they float etc. are throwbacks from our grandparents or great-grandparents days before refrigeration was home-affordable. Eggs stay good for a long time. I grew up having them kept on top of the refrigerator (not in..) and they'd be good for a couple of weeks even there.

If you keep them refrigerated they'll probably last a coupla months. If you keep them on the counter about 3 weeks is your range. They're not like milk which goes bad quick-sharp unless it's been pasteurised to death.
