Long story short, my visa is set to expire next month, and I am also changing employers. I've already applied for my CRC and have sent away for new transcripts etc.
My new employer says that they have talked to immigration, and i will have to go to Japan on a visa run - as they cannot 'renew' my work visa, they have to apply for a 'new' one.
What exactly is a visa run? My new employer is paying for airfare to/from Japan.
Can someone explain the visa run process? I was reading through the Visa run sticky - but that seems to be more technical (ie. what ferry/train to take etc). |

Visa runs are necessary because under Korean immigration rules, if you change jobs you need a new visa and you must leave the country in order to obtain the new visa.
Not sure exactly how it works these days but a few years back when I did my last visa run you filed some documents with immigration here and waited a week or so. Immigration then gave you some documents approving your new visa application which you then took to a Korean consulate in another country (usually Japan and usually Fukuoka). You got on a plane to that city and took those papers to the Korean consulate. The next day you went back, they issued your visa and you flew back to Korea with your new visa. Hope that explains it.
Someone else may know exactly what papers you need to take on your trip. Seems to me I heard that these days they don't give you any papers, just a 'visa number' and they may issue it the same day now, I don't know. Since I got married and stopped needing E2 visas I'm a little out of the loop. |

this is very curious because depending on when your visa was issued, it seems you should be able to transfer it to your new job. possibly your new prospective employer doesn't know this and is just assuming the old rules are still in effect.
you really should go talk to immi yourself - if your contract is coming up - you must have received a visa post Dec 2007 -
I'm in the same boat myself - will be finishing a contact in March and don't plan to get a new visa but transfer the old one.
go to the same immi office where you registered and received an ARC card.
please do POST what you find out, ok?! |

maybe it's changed ... i don't know, i'm f2 nowadays ... but your E2 used to be tied to your school (sponsor).
changing schools meant changing visas which meant leaving the country.
extending with the same employer was never a problem. just changing the sponsor meant doing a visa run.
is it still the same deal? |

Did you ever do a "beer run" back home? How about a "milk run"? It is the same thing! A "visa run" is a trip to get a visa. |
