I have a student i'm concerned about. He's still very young, and an energetic and lively kid. He recently came top in the class in a speaking and comprehension test and is extremely capable at conversing (at his level). However he cant read - not at all. On recently conducting a one on one reading test with him it was awful to watch him clam up and go all quiet and i actually cut the test short as we were going absoulutely no where and he was getting really uncomfortable.

does anyone know if dyslexia is a condition that is recognised in Korea? I have no way of telling if this is the case with this child, and maybe he's just a slow learner when it come to reading, but it would be good to know if this is an option or concept that exists here. I've mentioned it to my co-teacher and she looked at me blankly....but she does that a lot. Does someone know the Korean word for this condition? I'd hate for this kid to go through school with people telling him he's stupid. I'm sure this will happen anyway, but if i could do something about it now then it may prevent this to a degree.

how's his korean reading ability? i think it's hard to suggest whether he has dyslexia because he has trouble reading a foreign script.
