I spent my first 2 days here in SK just looking for a laptop adapter,

Biggest waste of time. Anyways, I finall found a transformer for 30,000 won at homeplus. It supports two North American plugs and has a replaceable fuse. thing is heavy though

If you have other electronics like a shaver it's not a bad investment. I've been using it for a long while it's nice, stable, and dependable.

Sometimes you can find adapter plugs in your neighborhood stationary shop, if they sell computer cables etc.

As you already know, but future newbies (like me, recently) might not have guessed, your laptop's existing Power Adapter should be able to handle the current here in Korea with no problems. My Macbook's certainly works like a charm.

Your goal in finding an adapter (rather than a "converter") is just to get your North American-shaped metal prongs converted into the round-shape used in Korea. The adapter doesn't have to change the electricity in any way.

As other posters have mentioned, for this small job, you just need a small plastic piece that fits onto your flat metal prongs and terminates in round metal ones instead. 500w to a 1000w is the most you'll need to pay for this, and you can pick it up in your local neighborhood hardware shop, or perhaps more expensively at places like HomePlus or E-Mart.

Second this. 500 won local shop works fine with Stateside power cord.

Try the camera shops in Namdaemun or your local general bits and bobs stores. You just need a plug converter. The brick will do voltage for you.

The other thing to keep in mind is that most bricks are 2 pieces. The brick to the laptop and from the brick to the wall. The brick to the wall usually comes off and is just a piece of cord that plugs in to the wall and plugs in to the brick. You can replace this with a Korean one (its what I did) and got a new one at technomart for around 4,000W.
This removes the whole 3 prong to 2 prong adapter from the mix.

I went to a stationary store and just bought a new cable

ie. your laptop should have the power cable that is two pieces . the first part goes into the laptop and then goes to a box that connects to a cable that goes to the power
just change the cable that goes to the outlet from an american one to a korean one. cost me 5 bucks
