The word "love" is nothing more than an umbrella term for an aggregate of instincts which we share with everyone else in the Mammal Class.
Other mammal adults show affection toward their young, just like we do.
Other mammals, especially those which hunt together, show camaraderie in stag groups, just like we do.
The species which are most susceptible to venereal disease practice monogamy, just like we do.
That's why I say that love was around 65 million years before the Christians came along and claimed it all for themselves. |

Whereas athiests...really what is it's mandate? If you come from apes...there really isn't much to stand for, is there? Seriously though...if America was an atheist country...what would it stand for? To advance the human nature through the use of genomes so that it can overcome death without the boundaries of morality? |
I thought Planet of Apes already showed you this.
Anyway, Tomato already answered this. America is a secular country;
| Quote: |
| Religious freedom, minority rights, freedom of speech, and separations of church and state. |
nateium added;
| Quote: |
| Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. |
Religion never held a monopoly on morality. It simply took it from society and tried to make it its own. |

No, it's not fully Christian to follow these values however it is fact that Christians are much more generous than the secular left.
Christians, as a whole, try to follow lives of love. That is their mandate and what they believe they will be judged by. A principle in which a nation should be built upon, right?
What does a secular nation stand for? |
Why would you assume my sister is on the left and how do you know that a christian would be more generous than her?
You are fudging. Those values are perfectly compatible with a good person not just a christian person.
I've known lots of christians that are complete bastards, and athiests who are bastards too of course.
You should say "ordinary decent people as a whole try to follow lives of love". You didn;t say that as your purpose is to offend.
A secular nation would just seperate God from the state. |
I think the difference is that Christians have a mandate to love. Do all do it...no of course not, but most do.
Whereas athiests...really what is it's mandate? If you come from apes...there really isn't much to stand for, is there? Seriously though...if America was an atheist country...what would it stand for? I am from the church of WTF. Know why? Because I haven't a clue if there is a 'God' or if there isn't a God. I think all Religions are a farce, including Atheism. In my opinion, somebody telling me that there definitely isn't a God (Atheism) or somebody telling me that they have the best God (Christians) is equally offensive.
To be honest though, Christian institutions drive me nuts. All of these Christians organizations going to Africa to feed the hungry children. Must be good right? Well...imagine how many more kids they could feed if all those bibles didn't take up so much room on the plane.
And quoting Bill Maher here...Why is Jesus a jealous God? If he is God, you would think that he could overcome a trivial human emotion such as jealousy.
Finally, what the $@$@% did Jesus ever do for Santa on his birthday??? |

Most atheists would say 'probably' or 'almost certainly', not 'definitely'. The strong atheist position can be considered a weak one, as we can't definitely say there is no Santa, elves, unicorns or Cthulhu. Then again as an atheist I feel as definite about the non-existence of God as I do about the non-existence of any supernatural being. Which of course I could be wrong about. If I'm prepared to say there definitely is no Santa, then I'm prepared to say the same about God. But my meaning would be colloquial not objective or scientific.
When is Santa's birthday? |

How about simply making life better on Earth? If I only have one life to live, I want it to be an enjoyable and meaningful one. If, after I die, the only thing which remains from me are my material possessions and legacy, I want to have my possessions put to good use and have a legacy which I find worthwhile.
If someone is suffering, I'd rather end the suffering for them now rather than help them after they die. |

Anti-theists are quite the preachers.
Apparently the only thing worse than hearing a Christian wax poetic about love is listening to an anti-theist mangle a pseudo-scientific explanation for it. |
