I'm thinking of applying for a job there, and I'd love to hear what people think of the place. I read that the layout of the city was based on Canberra, Australia Shocked As an Australian I'm not sure if thats good or bad.. Anyway, thanks in advance for any tips.

To add a comment to this thread before others jump in, I'm heading to Changwon in about 2 weeks and would love to hear about the night life and fun stuff the city has to offer. Anything and everything would be of great help.

Thanks! Smile

I've never been there, but i met a girl on my last visa run who is working there, and she realy liked it. She said the expat community is really close, and the city is really nice.

Sorry thats all i can offer.

Changwon is a really nice place to live. It's quite small (about 500,000 people), but there are a lot of really cool people there. The foreigner bar is called O'Briens and is owned by an Irish guy. He is one of the nicest guys I know. The bar has a pool table, darts, fusball table and a great western food menu. Busan is only about 40 minutes away, so it's not far to a big city. The roads are really wide, so it's a great place to get around by scooter. You guys should definately go there! PM me if you have any more questions.
Cheers,
K

Ditto the above,
Changwon is one of the nicer places to live in all of Korea and while the nightlife is a little boring(except the above mentioned O'Briens plus for the old veterans Ip -check that one out to KinKorea -) Busan is just up the road.
There are a good bunch of foreigners there and lots of parks in the middle of the city. its got an EMart and Lotte cinemas right in the centre of town plus the usual 100 LG 25s plus 20 Lotterias Smile . I rate it as the cleanest city in Korea(for its size).
However, it is in Kyeongsangnamdo - one of the conservative ares of Korea so at times small town minds do prevail especailly among the older people. You will cop a lot more staring than say in Seoul, Daegu or Busan but if you have lived in korea before than this should be no probs.

Not that this will affect my decision to possibly work there.... BUT

Just for interest sake, could you compare it's layout to Canberra (re my original post)

I'm an Aussie, but I've never been to Canberra.. I couldn't believe it when I read they had modelled it on that city..

Its not modelled on Canberra.
The comparison comes from the fact that it apparently is inspired by canberra. It has wider streets and a very big roundabout in the middle of the city and lots of greenery. In comparison, canberra is a lot more spacious and has many more green belts than Changwon.
Also, it is similar in that the industrial and residential parts of the city are seperated. It is a glorified comparison but to summarize, Changwon is the only planned city in Korea.

I heard that one of Seoul's 'satellite' cities (Bundang, or Ilsan I think it was) was planned also...
